Interestingly he did wear the DKiG only on those two Africa pictures! If anybody has more pictures I would really apreciate that!

Especially from his time as Schwadronschef in Stendal.

As far as I had understand it this was not "the Eichenlaub ceremony", but 10 recently decorated with the EL Generals where ordered to get to the Wolfsschanze to receive the congratulation for that by Hitler

Hello Gentlemen!

I just remembered having read a very short comment on Ernst-Günther Baade in Carlo D'Este's "Fatal Decision - Anzio and the Battle for Rome" (1991)...
...Major General Ernst-Günther Baade, a brilliant and eccentric veteran infantry officer and a strong Anglophile from his days as an expert rider on the horse circuit in Europe, who was fond of wearing kilts and notifying the Allies of the names of their POWs on their own radio frequencies. Baade had fought in North Africa, and in Sicily, as the commandant of the Strait of Messina, he played a key role in the evacuation of the island. As successful division commanders, von Vietinghoff rated (Heidrich) and Baade "in a class by themselves."
D'Este (1991)

Just a short comment on the discussion earlier in this thread about General officers that personally knocked out enemy AFVs.. You also have Generalleutnant Wolfgang Erdmann of the 7. FJD who destroyed two american tanks using Panzerfaust in 1945.

A bit of updated/corrected information on Baade:

His list of awards on Wikipedia and at World War II Awards have some errors and omissions:

• He was awarded the Hamburg Hanseatenkreuz in May 1918. The exact date was not given.
• His Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer was awarded on 5.2.35
• The award of the Tank Destruction Badge was dated 8.11.43.
• He did not receive the Infantry Assault Badge. Rather, he received the General Assault Badge on 20 August 1940 as Kdr., I./Reiter-Regt. 22. You can see it being worn in one of the photos posted by AlifRafikKhan.

Wikipedia lists Florian Berger, Mit Eichenlaub und Schwertern. Die höchstdekorierten Soldaten des Zweiten Weltkrieges as the source for several awards, including the Infantry Assault Badge. Is the error in the book?

Dave

Hello Dave!

In my opinion, there can be no doubt that it is error in the book: he received the General Assault Badge, not the Infantry Assault Badge. It is a fact! By the way, my file on this general:

Generalleutnant Ernst-Günther BAADE

- Ritterkreuz: am 27.06.1942 als Oberst und Kommandeur des Schützen-Regiment 115
- Eichenlaub (402): am 22.02.1944 als Oberst und Führer der 90. Panzer-Grenadier-Division (25.05.1944: Überreichung des Eichenlaub durch Adolf Hitler auf dem Berghof)
- Schwerter (111): am 16.11.1944 als Generalleutnant und Kommandeur der 90. Panzer-Grenadier-Division (29.12.1944: Überreichung der Schwerter durch General der Infanterie Kurt Brennecke)
- Deutsches Kreuz in Gold: am 02.11.1941 als Oberstleutnant und Kommandeur der I. Abteilung/ Reiter-Regiment 22
- EK II. Klasse: 25.11.1916
- EK I. Klasse: 24.12.1917
- Hamburgisches Hanseatenkreuz: 00.05.1918
- Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz: 01.07.1918
- Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer: 05.02.1935
- Dienstauszeichnung IV.-II. Klasse: 02.10.1936
- EK II. Klasse – Spange -: 18.09.1939
- EK I. Klasse – Spange - : 05.06.1940
- Allgemeines-Sturmabzeichen in Silber: 20.08.1940
- Verwundetenabzeichen in Silber

Best wishes.
