Re: Yugoslav War Crimes Trials of German Officials
I am interested to know what happened to my grandfather,( Max žager / Max Schager.)
died by Partizan April / May 1945 in celje.
my grandfather was (Volksdeutsche).
possibly from the Gestapo in celje.
His wife (my grandmother Pavla žager) was expelled along with my father and my uncle at the time under 6 and 9 years old.
They spent 3 years in the Trofaiach camp in Austria from January 1945 to October 1948.
I would like to know what happened to my grandfather.
I know he was in the Celje hospital and from there they took him to a prison, where after a few days they took him to kill him.

Re: Yugoslav War Crimes Trials of German Officials
just a clue:
Walter Hering may be the same as Walter Hering born 14.07.1909 in Bützow (Polizeiinspektor, SS-OstuF)
1941-1943 at KdS Radom, then at Stapo Köln
Heinrich Anton Hörmann SD-Einsatzgruppe Luxemburg (1944/1945)
so probably extradicted
Major der Schutzpolizei, SS #293303, 20.04.1943 SS-Sturmbannführer
from 05.1943 at BdO Belgrad, before in Poznan (1939-1940) and Krakow (1940-1941), unknown (1941-1943)

Do you know how the Yugoslav extradition requests were filed; for example who were the requests sent to? Does the paperwork still exist?

Re: Yugoslav War Crimes Trials of German Officials
Extradition to Yugoslavia.
As regards prisoners held in the British Zone in Civilian Internment Camps two things happened.
First, prisoners were checked against the CROWCASS Lists to show if any country had listed them as "Wanted". When such prisoners were so listed that country was advised through the the various war crimes commissions and extradition "offered".
Secondly, the various war crimes commissions (Poland is a good example) were allowed to trawl through the CI Camp records and interview prisoners. They were supposed to copy said interviews to the CI Camp intelligence officer but I have only ever found 3 or 4 among the thousands probably interviewed.
Once someone was of interest to the Yugoslav War Crimes Commission they had to make an extradition request with the accusations against them. It was not good enough for them to say hand them over as the Russians found.
Looks like at least a dozen files in UK NA, WO 309 series, involving Yugoslav extradition requests; one file on Ewald von Kleist.
There are more in the Foreign Office files, especially those for "Yugoslav quislings".

Steve -
I dabbled in this topic 25 to 35 years ago while doing fee-for-service investigative research on the Andrija Artukovic, Ivan Demjanjuk and Kurt Waldheim cases, and found boxes and boxes of correspondence circa 1945-50 between the U.N. War Crimes Commission and the individual country war crimes commissions regarding the extradition of individuals from the authority of the country holding the person to the authority of another country. The boxes were in several different record groups at the Federal Records Center/NARA, Suitland, Maryland. Copies of this World War II war crimes correspondence, files, etc., can also be found in the U.N. Library in New York. So, it seems that the U.N.W.C.C. played an important role in this subject.

Re: Yugoslav War Crimes Trials of German Officials
Hi Steve, Jürgen Wagner was visited in the Paderborn POW camp by two Yugoslavian officers, and there interrogated; presumably there should be some record of his extradition request in the NA filea, as with von Kleist?steve248 wrote: ↑24 Mar 2020, 10:02Extradition to Yugoslavia.

Re: Yugoslav War Crimes Trials of German Officials
Puck, the WO 309 series of files are only investigation files of (British) War Crimes Group/North West Europe. They are not trial files. WCG/NWE did establish cases for trial and these recommendations would have been placed in the hands of the military prosecutor. It was the military prosecutor who then raised an indictment for trial, in which case, the trial papers would be in WO 235 series. Mundt may have been recommended for trial but, as you say, nothing happened because Mundt was extradited to Yugo.
I see the file title (WO 309/510) says the crime investigated took place at Lovershen near Bomlitz. I take it Benefeld-Bomlitz are the same general area where the later denazification trials took place.
