An updated list of German war criminals hanged by American authorities in Europe may be found here. The list is not as comprehensive as it might be since it omits three executions of SS personnel (*) carried out in Italy in 1946, and the math contains a rather basic, although small error (the site figure of 281 executions should be 284 for four locations). In addition to the seven other hangings in Italy and Austria of war criminals, there were two known executions by shootings (Curt Brun and Anton Dostler) not mentioned here. We therefore have a total figure of 293 war criminals executed by American authorities in Europe (283 if you consider Nuremberg as an international affair).

(*) A brief description of the case may be seen here. It will be necessary to scroll down to find the case (#48, page 5).

I just came across all the original court documents for these trials including notes to as why sentences were changed to hanging. And what we're done with the bodies. They were burned and ashes buried. Also true last statement and wives motion for clemency

This is my first post on this form. In perusing this form, I've noticed information on two war criminals supposedly executed at War Crimes Prison #1 Landsberg who were not hanged there or anywhere else. SS Untersturmfuhrer Bruno Skierka was sentenced to death by an American military court at Dachau in the first Flossenberg Concentration Camp trial. His death sentence was confirmed but eventually reduced to life imprisonment by U.S. Army General Thomas Handy. Following that sentence reduction it was further reduced to 12 years and Skierka was released from Landsberg sometime in the early to mid 1950s.

The second Nazi war criminal in question was Ludwig Stier, a Wehrmacht captain, sentenced to death by hanging at Dachau in the case of U.S. vs Ernst Walter Dura et al for crimes committed at Mauthausen Concentration Camp. While under sentence of death and awaiting execution at Landsberg, Stier died of cardiovascular disease on September 5, 1947. He, like SS Standartenfuhrer Hermann Pister, died at Landsberg before his execution could be carried out. I discovered this when I saw that neither Skierka or Stier were on the list of executed war criminals in the Dachau cases signed by U.S. Army Colonel Damon M. Gunn, JAGC, on April 7, 1950. At that time there were no other executions of Nazi war criminals at Landsberg until the final seven were hanged on June 7, 1951. I hope this sheds some light on these two cases.

I did notice that SS Rottenfuhrer Michael Heller, sentenced to death at Dachau in the case of U.S. vs Franz Kofler et al for crimes committed at Mauthausen, was not on Col. Gunn's list of names of those hanged at Landsberg. He was hanged at Landsberg on November 19, 1948, according to documents I've seen on this forum. I assume Heller's omission on that list was an oversight by the typist in Col. Gunn's office.

Posters visiting the forum may be interested to learn that the infamous John C. Woods, an executioner at Landsberg and Buremberg is the subject of an extremely well researched biography, released just last month.

A new book entitled "The Hidden Nazi" by Dean Reuter makes a compelling case that the U.S. Army helped SS Obergruppenfuhrer Hans Kammler escape justice after the war. Kammler supposedly committed suicide in Czechoslovakia in early May 1945. If true, America intentionally assisted another Nazi war criminal evade trial after the war as it did with Gestapo officers Klaus Barbie and Rudolf Mildner, both guilty of war crimes in occupied France and Poland, respectively.

There are a number of Nazi war criminals whose fates recorded in most records I've seen are incorrect. For instance, Bruno Skierka is listed as having been hanged at Landsberg Prison by the U.S. Army after having been sentenced to death at Dachau for crimes he committed at Flossenberg concentration camp. In fact, Skierka's death sentence was reduced and he was released from Landsberg in the early to mid-1950s.

Karl Buck was sentenced to death by the British military and said to have been executed by firing squad on August 3, 1946, when in fact his sentence was eventually reduced and he, too, was freed. So, too, Max Rostock, supposedly sentenced to death by the Czechs and hanged in Prague in 1951. Rostock, like his fellow SS officers Skierka and Buck, was not executed but eventually released from Czech custody.

Another name is SS Standartenfuhrer Hermann Florstedt, one of Majdanek's commandants as well as deputy commandant of Buchenwald. He was sentenced to death by the SS for corruption and said to have been shot by an SS firing squad at Buchenwald on April 15, 1945. However, Buchenwald was liberated by American forces on April 11, 1945. Any thoughts from members of this forum?

Wrong.

"Bruno Skierka was tried by the US Military Tribunal in Dachau in the trial of the Flossenbürg crew and sentenced to death by hanging. The sentence was carried out in Landsberg prison on October 3, 1947." (Wikipedia). As a matter of fact he was not buried on the Spoetting cemetery (especially for the german "war criminals")

Sorry, Markus. Once again Wikipedia sometimes gets its info from unreliable sources. When doing research on the concentration camp cases held by the U.S. Army at Dachau, I came upon a document from Gen. Thomas T. Handy's office. He was commander-in-chief of EUCOM (U.S. European Command). Under "Official Announcements" (no date given), it reported: "Clemency for nine war criminals acting on the recommendations of the War Crimes Modification Board has reduced the sentences of nine war criminals convicted in 1947 of having participated in operation of the Flossenburg Concentration Camp. War criminals granted clemency and the action taken in their cases are as follows:" The document then lists the names of the nine war criminals including "Bruno Skierka, 53, from life to 12 years." Worthy of note is that this document came after Skierka's first sentence modification that commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment.

The main Flossenberg concentration camp case saw a total of 15 of the defendants sentenced to death. Only 11 of those death sentences were actually carried out, though. The four not executed, including Skierka, had their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment and later, see above, had further reductions of their "life" sentences to a number of years. All four were eventually released from Landsberg Prison.

Skierka's incorrectly reported execution can be found on numerous sites on the 'net. The same is true of Karl Buck and Max Rostock, both tried and sentenced to death by the British and Czechs, respectively; although neither Buck nor Rostock were ever executed. I'm still trying to find confirmation of the alleged SS execution of SS Standartenfuhrer Hermann Florstedt shortly before the war's end.

Sometimes? More often than not, IMHO. They even block scholars because theyself are often uneducated in the matter and not able to differ right from wrong. Not knowing foreign languages (eg. Polish) and arguing about text in the language which they do not understand nor are they able to read it. This is especially true when it comes to the Holocaust and ornithology.

Today if you ask the Archive of Sachsenhausen or Buchenwald is Florstedt listed as MIA or that he just vanished. But they are both sure that he survived the war.
