Post by andrew184 » 08 Nov 2019, 22:57

Dear all,

I am trying to find out the full name of this Colonel, so that I find be able to find out more about him. I have been able to find out that he held the following roles/positions:

1. Served as an advisor to Finland when it created its army and general staff.

2. From 1942 - Chef der Kriegsgeschichtlichen Abteilung des Heeres (War Historical Branch of the Army - replacing General Hermann Starke)

3. 1943 - Chef der Heeresbüchereien (Head of the Army Libraries)

Does anybody have any more information?

Kind regards,
Andrew

The above one comes from Hans' lists which I too have (I help him with his lists), but I have many other sources in my data bank, very many officers lists incl. all DAL and PV (both from HPA) and personal cards (from HPA too), most in rolls (Nara)

That is a really great resource! Thanks again! Do you happen to have a certain Colonel von Kaufmann - head of the Kriegsgeschichtliche Abteilung (WKrGesch) from May 1943 - in the list? I've also been looking everywhere for his first name. Sorry to be a pain!

Here he is (from Hans' list as well......)

Oberstleutnant (E) 01.10.37 von KAUFMANN Georg (7.Abt. Kriegswissenschaftl.Abt./OKH) Oberst (01.04.41)

What is Your source for Chef d. Kriegsgeschichtl.Abt. ???

I believe it is wrong. He came from the Kriegswissenschaftl.Abt., so I believe he became Chef of this Abt. instead.

By the way, why Your interest in these officers and in these Abteilungen ?

Hi Rossano,

Apologies for the late reply, I had only just seen it. I should have been a bit more precise before. Kaufmann was only in charge of personnel matters inside the Kriegsgeschichtl.Abt OKW. He assumed these responsibilities in May 1943. Scherff remained in charge of the department's research. Source is: BArch RM 8/1582.

Scherff and Kaufmann had previously worked together in the 7. Abt. in the late 1930s.

Kaufmann was made temporary head of the Historical Department of the OKH, after Brückner was dismissed. He eventually relinquished leadership of the department to Colonel Adalbert von Boetticher in May 1944.

I am currently working on a biography of Walter Scherff, hence my interest in these men. I really appreciate your help with it!

Kind regards,
Andrew

Heeresbücherei etc.

#10

Post by Halfdan S. » 14 Dec 2019, 23:35

Hi,

I'll throw in a few more Names for the Heeresbücherei etc.:

Oberstleutnant Dr. phil. Friedrich Bräuninger (Berlin, 18.6.1901-Potsdam, 28.4.1945); Direktor der Heeresbücherei (buried Potsdam Neuer Friedhof)

Gadow, Reinhold (1882-1946) [Konteradmiral] -- director of the Armed Forces High Command Library Sept 1940-Mar 1945 (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, Direktor der Bücherei) {taken prisoner by Soviet troops; died in Soviet captivity autumn 1946 at Sachsenhausen POW camp (ANR-K; ABR-Croisier-K).}

Hermann Starke
28.5.1881
Pensionierter Generalleutnant (Generalleutnant a.D.) im Ruhestand
His File in MA-BA Freiburg is PERS 6/300975

Talking of Starke ... we have another Person by this Name, and who, as Dr. Bräuninger, also fell in Potsdam on 28.5.1945:
Oberstleutnant STARKE Ernst 29.04.1896 Dresden 28.04.1945 Potsdam (buried Potsdam Neuer Friedhof).

Thank you very much Halfdan S.

I have two further names of members of the Kriegsgeschichtliche Abteilung des Heeres, these men killed themselves together with their wives in a suicide pact in 1945:

Colonel Pino von Belli
Colonel Freiherr von Salmuth

Do they by any chance appear in your lists?

Andrew
Starke was Chef d. kriegswissenschaftl. Abt. (!!!), and Brückner was in the same Abt. too.
Die kriegsgeschichtl. Abt. was another/different Abt.(with another officer as Chef !!!)
Also, Belli von Pino is correct (!). He probably was i. d. kriegswiss. Abt. too….
Sure that v. Boetticher (maybe v. Bötticher correct ?) was 1944 Oberst (maybe Otl. ?)
Was he a Res. or akt. Offz. ?

Hi Rossano,

Sorry about the late reply, by the way.

Yes, my mistake. Brückner was head of the Kriegsgeschichtliche Abteilung des Heeres. Starke remained head of the Kriegswissenschaftliche Abt. until it was closed down at the end of 1943.

Belli von Pino was certainly in the Kriegsgeschichtliche Abteilung when he committed suicide, but could also have worked under Starke before it was closed.

I`ve seen both spellings for v. Boetticher. I`ll have to check for sure when I`m in Freiburg again in a couple of months - I hope to locate his file there.

I wondered whether I might bother you and Halfdan one more time? Is there perhaps a Dr. Richter in your list. She was a former student of Walter Elze (Dr. phil) in Berlin. And worked in the Archive at the Kriegsgeschichtliche Abteilung OKW under Scherff for about a year. I came across her during my research, but can`t find out her first name. She is the only female researcher have I have yet encountered during my research into the historical institutions of the Wehrmacht - for that reason I am very curious.

Thank you so much for the interesting discussuion here and apologies once again for my late reply.

Kind regards,
Andrew
