Type of AFV of 8eGAM and 182e GRDI 1940
Type of AFV of 8eGAM and 182e GRDI 1940
Hi, everyone, I am Looking for type and number of AFV in two Units in 8eGAM ( in English should be 8th Machine Gun Armored car Group) in Levant and 182e GRDI of 182e DIA in Algeria in 1940 before armistice with Germany ?
Regarding 8e GAM, this unit contributed 2e and 3e armoured car squadrons to GRDI of both 191e and 192e infantry divisions. I want to know what the remainder of AFV in its 1, 4 and 5 squadrons in this unit ? Thank
Also 182e GRDI had 14 x AFV, I think is it Laffly 50 like 181e GRDI or mixed with Laffly Vincennes 80 or Laffly S15 TOE or Panhard 165/175 ? Thank

Hello, Kelvin!
Have you seen "Armée du Levant-French Army of the Levant 1920-1946-Notes on its Organisation and Orders-of-Battle" by Alexis Mehtidis? This unpublished paper, which can easily be found on the internet, describes the 8e GAM of 1933 as consisting of three squadrons, all of which were equipped with White armored cars (Model 1917).
The paper describes the 8e GAM of 1940 as consisting of five squadrons and two "special platoons"
1e Escadron (moves from to Palestine to join Free French in July 1940)
2e Escadron (assigned to GRDI)
3e Escadron (assigned to GRDI)
4e Escadron (formed in 1940, equipped with 10 White armored cars, stationed in Damascus)
5e Escadron (formed in 1940, equipped with 10 White armored cars, stationed in Aleppo)
Special Platoons (White, Panhard, and Hotchkiss armored cars as well as Panhard scout cars)

This, alas, is something that I don't know. There is a photo of Free French armored cars in Palestine in 1940 or so in the paper of Mr. Mehtidis. There is, however, no identification of the unit in question.

Re: Type of AFV of 8e GAM
hello
the story of a 1st squadron crossing the border to Palestine, it came from the 1er RSM 1st Moroccan Spahis Regiment, it became the nucleus of the 1er RMSM of Free France,
there were some officers NCO's and others ranks from others units, the JMO of the 8e GAM lists only one captain, 2 NCO's and 4 men coming from Beyrouth and Damas
Archives JMO (52 pages) of the 8e GAM is available online at Mémoire des Hommes website on the left *Première Partie : période 1916-1940*
under Journal des marches et opérations des corps de troupes.
-> Cavalerie
--> Compagnies méharistes du Levant devenues compagnies légères du désert le 1er janvier 1936.
---> Dossier 4

the 1st squadron as 2nd and 3rd was equiped with 10 White in september 1939
when the 5th squadron was disbanded it counted 11 White
5th april 1940 18 White previously with the squadrons of 191e and 192e GRDI returned to the 8e GAM

Hi, Loic, what u refer to White is mean White 1918 armoured cars or Laffly AMD 50 White armoured cars ? I see Sources mentions that 100 old White 1918 were converted into Laffly 50 and 80 of These were in colonies. Thank
