Hello all,

Just to confirm, the Sturmbannführer on the photo greeting the mufti is Albert Faßbender, right? Interesting that he`s (still) wearing the cuff title of the Langemarck Division. Photo is from the SS Kriegsberichter website, NARA collection.

Cheers,
Filip

Hello, Filip

There's no Faßbender there. It's Götz Berens von Rautenfeld, with cuff-title of the 4th SS Infantry Regiment "Langemarck".

Shaking hands with the Mufti is indeed [Berens] von Rautenfeld - who indeed wears the "Langemarck" cuff-title, we discussed it a decade ago here http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 0#p1045220 ("Langemarck" refers to the SS-Inf.-Regt. 4)

Covered by the Mufti is Sauberzweig.

Covered by [Berens] von Rautenfeld is Karl Liecke (who wears the "SS-Polizei-Division" cuff-title).

Covered by Liecke is Husein Đozo.

SS-Ostuf. on the right is Carl Rachor.

Who is Sturmbannführer who is introducing himself to Mufti?

from left to right: Sauberzweig, the Mufti's interpreter, the Mufti, Liecke (Ib), [Berens] von Rautenfeld (IIa) (who is shaking hands with the Mufti), and Rachor (Ic)
(Notice that both of the above photos were taken at the same moment, only by different photographers.)

And this is what Albert Faßbender looked like:

Was Fassbender at this officer's greeting of the Mufti, or was he photographed later?

Hello, Filip

I don't remember seeing Faßbender in any of the photos taken during the Grand Mufti's visit (that doesn't mean he wasn't there). There's only one more officer partially visible in the "officers greeting" photos (which were probably taken on an airport, after the Mufti landed), and that is an Ostuf. with a tall field grey fez, whose name I don't know. He appears in some more photos afterwards.

Cheers,
Ivan

Hello, Ivan

Which is the photo you're referring to, if you don't mind me asking? Could it be the men behind Sauberzweig?

Cheers, Filip

I was just preparing a collage :) In the above photo, there's (from left to right) Đozo, Liecke, Rachor and Berens von Rautenfeld in the background.

This is the additional officer (Ostuf.) I was referring to:

Wow, Ivan you were right, an unusually tall fez (or at least typical to the the non-shortened fezzes of the training days). Do we have more info on his breast award?

Filip

Hello, Ivan

Is our "mystery man" the one on the furthest right, in the back, on this photo?

Cheers,
Filip

Hello, Filip

Yes, that's the guy. This photo was taken at the end of the visit (the Mufti says goodbye to the troops there), hence the difference in uniforms (most officers are wearing overcoats; also pictured: Liecke and Berens von Rautenfeld). No idea about the officer's breast award though, too blurry for my eyesight.

Cheers,
Ivan

Hello, Ivan

Yes, the first batch of photos were at the, what I assume is an airfield, whereas these ones were the greeting (saying goodbye to the) Stabsjägerkompanie. AFAIK, he´s the only guy with the tall field gray fez, contrary to the red ones that Sauberzweig, Rautenfeld and co. wore

Cheers,
Filip

To avoid possible confusion: I believe the first four photos here (see the enclosed file) were taken at an airfield (I don't know whether the airfield was part of the camp ground or not). We can see what appears to be a runway and a car waiting for the Mufti (and the staff officers welcoming him). Then we see him arriving at the camp (notice the cobblestone floor now) and being welcomed by Lüth and his Stabsjäger. After the visit was over, he was escorted by the same honour guard (Stabsjäger) and he left the camp the way he arrived, in a car.

Yes, Ivan - I was thinking of the same. The cobblestone was an indicator of the change of the location. Only the "saluting officers" scene with the cameramen and microphone close to Mufti's mouth is from that airfield close to Mufti's car.

Cheers, Filip
