Romanian 21st Infantry Division commander, 1940

#1

Post by CNE503 » 08 Mar 2020, 15:57

Hello,

Does anyone know who was commander of this Romanian infantry division in early July 1940, during the Soviet annexation of Bessarabia and northern Bucovina?
I'm specifically looking for who was heading this unit before Major General Cristache Popescu, who took this command on July 31st, 1940.

Thank you for any help provided.

In found the following inconclusive elements for the CO of this 21st Infantry Division in late June 1940:
- Brigadier General S. Dimitriu did command the division as of 1939;
- a colonel Correcu was acting commander somewhen in 1940;
- Major General Christache Popescu took command on July 31st, 1940.

My understanding is that general Dimitriu was the dismissed one because of his bad decisions during the Soviet occupation of Bessarabia. Colonel Correcu took command after him, as an interim CO. Popescu was the official replacement for Dimitriu.

Could anyone please confirm this? Has someone additional elements about Dimitriu and Correcu?

Thank you for your help.

As I said on the other topic, I started to look in the book I have about 1940 year and Romanian army and it appears during the retreat, the command of 21st Infantry was taken over by general Ion Glogojanu, the one who died in the Odessa at October 22 1941 was killed by an explosion at his headquarters.

Hello,

It makes sense that if the CO of the division was relieved of command, the senior general in the unit took his place. This one should have been Glogojanu.
But we still have not the name of the guy he succeeded...
Excellent source of information though! Have you some elements about how was perceived the German military mission and the effectiveness of its training amongst the Romanian officers? I'm very very interested in this topic (because I'm a scholar doing currently a PhD on the issue of the German mission in Romania).

Does anyone know the name of the commanding officer of the Romanian 21st Infantry Division in June 1940? He was replaced by general Ion Glogojanu in the last days of June or the earliest ones of July.

Thank you.

Apparently, general Sotir Dumitriu was sent in reserve status on October 5th, 1939. So he wasn't CO of the division in 1940.
Any information about his successor and/or colonel Correcu would be highly appreciated.
