Here is another photo of later Generaladmiral Witzell, taken in November 1939. On his ribbon bar the "Vor dem Feinde" clasp is clearly visible. In my opinion the second ribbon looks like a BM4X.

Reason:
1. He was in active service from 1894 until 1919, that's exactly 25 full years.
2. The 3rd ribbon from the right on his long ribbon bar (the dark one) is the Preußisches Dienstauszeichnungskreuz in graveland's and my opinion.

You can also delete the sentence at the bottom: "One of those awards might be the Königlich Preußisches Dienstauszeichnungskreuz I. Klasse (he was in service from 1894 until 1919, but I can't confirm he received it)."

According to Matikkala's book cited above, Canaris received only the Cross of Liberty, 1st Class, with Swords and Breast Star (on 16 September 1941), never the Oak Leaves. The only wartime German recipients of that cross with Swords, Breast Star and Oak Leaves were Halder, von Küchler and Dietl.

The libraries are about to reopen here, so I can go and check this once I have the opportunity. But Matikkala's book is very comprehensive and if it doesn't mention the Oak Leaves I'm pretty certain Canaris didn't receive them.

Edit: I found Canaris' entry in this book on Google books. Can you please translate it? From the index it appears Canaris is mentioned only once, on this page (69).
