Re: Id. british vehicle
This is a detail of a photo from France, 1940. I'm under the impression that the vehicle is British. Can anyone tell which unit?

I'd say it is definitely from a French artillery unit, the marking on the door indicating the battery within the regiment. My first blind guess would be that it is some sort of radio or other signals vehicle with the roof rack torn off.

I've tried to find any online resources for BEF and French Army vehicle markings, and at least the latter is severely lacking (at least in English). I'll give it
a try,though.

In my case it would involve a trip to the loft to consult my Vauvillier and I am feeling somewhat lazy at the moment. However, in the morning I may feel altogether different .
Hmm, OK, I did the decent thing. Best guess its a Renault OS 850kg with a specialist body I don't recognise.

Thanks! The details check out for a Renault OS4 or OS5; it's just that the roof is taller than what the few photos on the net show.gebhk wrote: ↑08 May 2020, 20:42In my case it would involve a trip to the loft to consult my Vauvillier and I am feeling somewhat lazy at the moment. AFAIK these vehicles were not made for or bought by the army. What there was, was acquired from mobilising/requisitioning civilian vehicles and thus would have come with whatever adaptations (factory or after sales) that they served their former masters with. The 'raised' roof probably isn't a raised roof as such but a second roof over the original cab roof creating a useful shelf accessible from the inside of the van body.
