King George V

Post by AJK » 13 May 2020, 03:29

As reigning monarch of the UK, King George V held several foreign honorary military ranks. In 1923 he was awarded the rank of Admiral in the Swedish Navy. Does anyone know the exact date of this appointment>

Thanks,

AJK

Hi Steen,

Why am I not surprised that you have the answer to my question! :-) Thank you very much! In the same vein, do you have a date for flaggmans hedersgrad for Tsar Nicholas II?

Best wishes,

AJK

Thank you so much, Steen! I don't suppose you have a date for his (Tsar Nicholas II) similar honorary promotion in the Danish Navy?

While we're on the subject, how about Danish honorary Admiral (1948) and General (1927) ranks for King George VI?

Thanks,

AJK

9 Nov 1862: General
29 May 1875: Field Marshal
1883: Generalfeldmarshall (German Empire)
18 Jul 1887: Honorary Admiral of the Fleet (Royal Navy)
26 Jun 1902: Grossadmiral (German Empire)
1 May 1904: Feldmarschall (Austria-Hungary)
7 Apr 1907: Honorary Captain General (Spain)
?: Honorary Admiral (Spain)
?: Honorary Admiral (Sweden)
?: Honorary General (Sweden)
?: Honorary Admiral (Greece)
?: Honorary General (Norway)

Thanks, and best wishes,

I don't think he was ever a Generalfeldmarshall. He is not listed in any of the Dienstalterslisten/Anciennetätslisten or Ranglisten that I have access to, contrary to his brother the Duke of Connaught who is listed.

Spain
Honorary Admiral - Listed as such in the Estado General de la Armada 1907 edition (without date), but not in the 1906 edition.

Sweden
July 15 1905 Admiral (flaggmans hedersgrad)
November 18 1908 General (hedersgrad)

Norway
November 15 1906 General (Æresgrad)

Hi AJK,

You are welcome.

Having checked. The Spanish press reports the award of the rank Almirante Honorario to Edward VII in May 1905, and the journal "Vida Maritima" cites a telegram from Almirante Béranger to Edward VII on the May 17 1905 congratulating him on the appointment and it also cites the King's reply the next day. This leads me to think that the award of the rank took place on either May 16 or May 17 1905.

Take care.

Unfortunately, I can't find his official appointment in the Official Gazette.
However, in case you are interested (and if you don't already know it), I can tell you that King Edward VII was awarded the rank of honorary colonel of the Spanish Infantry Regiment "Zamora" nº 8 on 4 October 1905, and the rank of honorary captain general of the Spanish Army on 7 April 1907.
