Aviation Fuel
Can somebody explain me the different sorts of fuel used by the Luftwaffe.
Fliegerhorst Eindhoven had fuel tanks containing A1, C2 and E1. And there was a special T-Stoff Lager.
For cars and trucks they had Otto-Kraft and Diesel.

Re: Aviation Fuel
Hi,
Since no one has replied, I'll share what I can remember:
A, C and E would relate to octane ratings of AV Gas
A1=100 octane
C2=87 octane
T-Stoff was used in rocket assisted take off units Walther HWK 109-500. Because of it's explosive properties, special handling was required.
Hope my memory is correct.
Regards,
Rand

Re: Aviation Fuel
Sorry, that is not quite correct.
In short:
Prior 1940, the GERMAN distinction was only Fliegerbenzin (Aviation gasoline) with an octane number (80, 87) and Flugdiesel (if required).
After 1940 RLM came up with a classification system:
A (A-1 80 Okt., A-2 87 Okt.) The fuel is usualy distilled from crude oil.
B (B-1 80 Okt., B-4 87 Okt.) Fuel that would typically be generated by synthesis (coal etc).
C (C-3 94/ 97 Okt.) High octane fuel of various compositions. Occaisionaly also dubbed 100 Oktan in German.
Flugdiesel, aerodiesel of undisclosed composition, generation and octane rating. Different names.
E (E-1 80 Okt.) special fuel for Ramjets (V-1 etc...).
J (J-2, Brennöl) fuel for BMW003, Jumo004 jet engines.

Re: Aviation Fuel
Thanks Christian,
The E-1 fuel was used for RAM jets like the V1, Is that an indication that an air base had V-1's or destined to have them? Eindhoven was a bomber base during the war with Heinkel 111, Junkers 88 and Dornier 217's.
The court martial files also stated that the T-Stoff Lager would be destroyed by a special unit because of its secrecy. It was not the responsibility of the base commander, was the Walter HWK system a secret project at that time?
Best regards
Hans

Re: Aviation Fuel
The indexing of E-1 fuel is dated 1945. AFAIK, Eindhoven was only under german ocupation until arnd Sept 1944. I cannot say if it would be correct that conlusion that E-1 is realy referring to ramjet fuel. OTOH a V-1 could also be and was launched from from a He111. But still I do not know if Eindhoven was one of those bases.hansvandedonk wrote: ↑02 Jul 2020, 08:16Thanks Christian,

T-Stoff was not only used as propellant in a RATO unit. By 1944 that was not realy a secret anymore. But it would be plausible to be found on Bomber base, as the Rato units were needed for bombers with overweight payload and or a too short runway.
But T-Stoff was also the propellant for the Me163B with HWK 100-509. And that was in 1944/45 still top secret. Yet I do not know, if Eindhoven was even considered a Base for the Me163.

Re: Aviation Fuel
Hi Christian,
Thanks for your reply. There are no signs that Eindhoven had V-weapons or the Me163 but the base was a large air base with 3 runways so why using RATO when the runway is long enough? E-1 is mentionned in the original files as is the T-Stoff Lager. Before the Lufwaffe left the base in early September the Fliegerhorstkommandant contacted the Technical Leiter of the Anlage because he had no authority over the Anlage. The Technical Leiter told him that because of its secrecy a special unit would arrive to destroy it. So a lot of questions.

Re: Aviation Fuel
Just one notice, V 1 was powered by a pulse jet, not a ramjet.
