Die blonde Rie

#226

Post by Auceps » 02 May 2020, 00:02

It seems that 'Die blonde Rie (In Holland steht, aus Klinkerstein)' had also the fourth strophe:

And it seems that originally Hartmann didn't mean any 'sexual' subtext for the song, but was merely inspired by a Dutch neighbour child near his barracks in Haarlem, whom he made a pen friend with his own daughter in Germany.

Correct, the song originally had four strophes (I've corrected some minor bits in the lyrics you posted). It looks like the author may have been in touch with the lyricist's son, who shared a similar story with me a decade ago (a very nice gentleman, by the way). Or with the aforementioned lyricist's daughter, of whom I haven't heard (Mr Hartmann didn't mention her, nor anyone being pen friends with Maria/Rie).

Herms Niel and "Die blonde Rie", a.k.a. "Hollandlied", were heavily covered by the Dutch press at the time. The song was meant to be as popular among the Dutch people as "Erika" was in Germany. Niel held several concerts in the Netherlands from 27 April to 3 May 1942, performing "Die blonde Rie" for the first time. He recorded the song for the Grammophon six days later (9 May 1942).

One of the earliest mentions of the song, including its lyrics, from Deutsche Zeitung in den Niederlanden, 08.03.1942, p. 6

Solang' wir frohe Lieder singen,
kann uns kein Teufel niederzwingen.
Und schlägt der Frack auch Falten;
wir bleiben doch die Alten... (Herms Niel)

Is that part of a (known) song?

I don't think it's part of a song, but I can't be sure. The text/scan itself originates from Goedecke & Krug's book "Wir beginnen das Wunschkonzert für die Wehrmacht", p. 215 (compare with the scan below). There are short handwritten texts by various Wunschkonzert performers in the book, besides Niel's. I assume they were given to the authors or their associates.

As you may have noticed, the notes above Niel's signature are of the refrain of his biggest wartime hit, the "Matrosenlied"; he also wrote the lyrics below them: "...denn wir fah-ren ge-gen Engel-land..."

As we could see in the previously posted examples, he often used his "denn wir fahren" notes as part of his autograph in the early 1940s:
