Re: Adolf Eichmann rank?
I agree he was not a "role model" only a "specialist".

Re: Adolf Eichmann rank?
I see that now, you are right
I admit I've had a lot of trouble trying to understand Eichmann's career, and his exact position in the system. This topic and your insights gave me a lot of informations and helped me understand better the man

Re: Adolf Eichmann rank?
This looks very promising
I am already searching on Amazon for a book about Wewelsburg Castle (Heinrich Himmler's Camelot: Pictorial/Documentary; The Wewelsburg Ideological Center of the SS, 1934-1945," by Stephen Cook and Stuart Russell; advised to me by Br. James) so I'll do a bundle order
This forum is really the best, I am learning a lot of things in a really short time and everyone is very kind and knowledgeable
I hope to stay on here for a long time!

Wewelsburg book deal with SS Generals a castle (restored by inmates from KL Niederhagen) where Himmler guest his SS generals . A dream of an SS aristocracy. Far from Eichmann world.

Re: Adolf Eichmann rank?
I know, but since I am active on a topic about Wewelsburg, and I was advised of a good book by a member, I'll be buying both books possibly to save on the expedition
I prospect a lot of good reading for the next week-end!

Re: Adolf Eichmann rank?
The main reason for Eichmann's lack of promotion prospects was he had neither a civil service rank nor a police rank. It was fortunate for him that because of his "niche" in RSHA - the secretive Judenreferat - he did not spend much time with his contemporaries. Many SS officers without a civil service or police background suffered from snobbish behaviour of their contemporaries.
Many SS-Ustuf. and SS-Ostuf. who had the police rank of Kriminalangestellte or KrimAsst on Osteinsatz were looked down on by those of a similar SS rank but were KKs or KRs.
Eichmann's deputy, SS-Stubaf. Regierungsrat Rolf Günther had better career prospects if the war had not ended too soon for them.

You're right,
to illustrate it : case of Otto Lurker former prison ward at Lansberg (met Hitler) . He rose to the rank of SS-Standartenfürher since 37. SD-Abschnittsführer Graz then KdS Marburg . He was promoted Krim. Oberinspektor on 1944.

Re: Adolf Eichmann rank?
I've read that Eichmann's final promotion to Standartenführer in 1943 or 1944 was blocked by Ernst Kaltenbrunner.
Although they had been childhood friends, Kaltenbrunner was annoyed by Eichmann's brief flirtation with Freemasonry in the early 1930s and then again by his continued involvement with the church and his persistent religious beliefs. He was chided by Kaltenbrunner about this on several occasions and only left the church in 1937.
Their friendship gradually deteriorated as the years progressed through a combination of different career trajectories and Kaltenbrunner's snobbishness towards his old friend.
Had Kaltenbrunner not become Chief of the RSHA in 1943, Eichmann may well have reached the rank of full SS colonel.

Re: Adolf Eichmann rank?
Eichmann and Kaltenbrunner as childhood friends - nonsense.
Eichmann was brought up in Solingen/Germany; Kaltenbrunner in Austria.
Eichmann studied Maschinenbau at a local college; Kaltenbrunner went to Wien University
They probably did not meet until after March 1938 in Vienna when Eichmann set up the Zentralstelle by which time, according to the post above, Eichmann had already left the church.
Eichmann was promoted SS-Ostubaf on 9 Nov 1941 so a promotion to SS-Staf in 1943-1944 was most unlikely.
So many myths about Eichmann simply made up by lazy authors.

Eichmann's father was an accountant who moved to Linz in 1913.steve248 wrote: ↑21 Sep 2020 12:23Eichmann and Kaltenbrunner as childhood friends - nonsense.

Kaltenbrunner's family moved to Linz (possibly 1918) so he could attend school there at the prestigious State Realgymnasium.
There are numerous sources regarding their friendship. See Mike Miller's biography below:

12.09.1913-00.00.1921 Attended the Staatsrealgymnasium in Linz (passed his Matura [= Abitur], Summer 1921). Together with seven other students, he boarded with Frau Berta Kalzer, a lawyer’s widow, during this period, as his parents continued to reside in Raab until moving to Linz in 1918. He befriended his future subordinate Adolf Eichmann at this school. At Nürnberg, Kaltenbrunner denied any close association with Eichmann, however a number of sources stand in contrast to that assertion
Eichmann even attended Kaltenbrunner's wedding in 1934. I didn't know this until today:

There is an excellent article somewhere on a German news site about how they were almost captured together by the Americans in May 1945. I must try and locate it...
