Tank & Mech Corps recce battalion and At gun

#1

Post by Kelvin » 03 Oct 2020, 16:29

Hi, everyone, I would like to ask Soviet tank/Mech corps sometimes had 85mm gun battalion, I want to know what model is it ? D-44 was only introduced in 1944 ?

And I also see in 1943 prior to Kursk, Soviet Mech/Tank corps had two recce units : 288 men motorcycle battalion and 220 men armoured car battalion.

Did armoured car battalion had 20 x US M-3 or Soviet BA-10 or lighter BA64 ?

And any SU-57 was introduced in motorcycle battalion in July 1943 ? Thank

Common anti-aircraft guns towed by tractors.
And I also see in 1943 prior to Kursk, Soviet Mech/Tank corps had two recce units : 288 men motorcycle battalion and 220 men armoured car battalion.
There were two variants of armored car battalion organization adopted in 1942:
Shtat 010/289 - 112 men, one tank company with 7 T-70 tanks, two armored car companies with total 22 BA-64
Shtat 010/389 - 208 men, one armored car company with 12 armored cars, two armored carrier companies with total 20 armored carriers (apparently "Universal" carriers) and corresponding number of infantry.

The first variant seems to be more common.

They were never introduced formally (i.e. in TO/Es) as far as I know, but in fact substituted towed anti-tank guns. I don't know exactly when it started.

Hi, Art, thank so much for your information. I see Charles Sharp book Soviet OOB mentions 208 men armored car company was equipped with heavy armored cars, is it mean BA-10 ? thank

According to an organization diagram reproduced the General Staff's establishment album the reconnaissance battalion consisted of two armored carrier companies (54 men each) and an armored car company (45 men). Assuming 10 armored cars in the latter company that means that it was equipped with heavy armored cars (4-men crew) like BA-10 or earlier. Also there were apparently 2 armored cars at the battalion HQ, but nothing can be said about their type.

Hi, Art, thank for your addition. I see 1st Tank Corps had 97 x BA-64 armored car before meeting German relief force to Stalingrad in Operation Winter Storm. It is big figure.

David Glantz book Stalingrad endgame : chapter on Soviet preparation against German relief force in Operation Winter Storm, it mentions 4th Mechanized Corps had 79 x T-34, 77 x T-60 and 97 x BA-64.

I guess, that could mean 97 armored cars and armored carriers. Sometimes they were the same column of the reporting tables. The authorized number of various armored cars and armored carriers in the 1942's mech. corps was above 100.
