Hello Michi
Thank you for the informative post, just a few comments :

- Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment „Tagliamento“ did not originate from 8. Rgt. Alpini, it merely used the barracks that had earlier belonged to that regiment, which had disbanded fully after the Italian armistice. In fact at the beginning the regiment it was not even an « Alpini » unit, as you rightly write, but it was formed mainly by Blackshirts of 55. and 63. Legions and it had the name Friaulisches Freiwilligen-Regiment „Tagliamento“. It took the name of Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment „Tagliamento“ only in April 1944. Right from its formation, started in September 1943, it was under the control of the BdO beim HSSPF Adriatisches Küstenland.
I was intrigued by the sentence « Sollte als 4. Bataillon ein CCNN Btl. haben », do you know more about this ?

- Freiwilligen-Polizei-Gebirgs-Jäger-Bataillon „Tagliamento“ :
this is a very unclear case : an order by the Hauptamt Ordnungspolizei from November 1944 said that Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment „Tagliamento“ was to be transformed into the Freiwilligen-Polizei-Gebirgs-Jäger-Bataillon „Tagliamento“, probably it was intended to incorporate the regiment into the German Police.
The German personnel for the Bataillon (250 men, intended probably as cadre personnel) arrived in Udine only in February 1945, but they were lacking weapons ; in March their commander, Major Sprinckstub, was asking for the necessary weapons to equip at least an Einsatz-Kp. At the same time the Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment „Tagliamento“ was still in combat in the Isonzo and Natisone river valleys (where it remained until the last days of April 1945, when it withdrew to Cividale where it surrenderes to Italian partisans), so it seems that for a time in early 1945 the Regiment and the Bataillon both existed ; at any rate it is clear that they never merged.

Hello all,

This photo is from the album of a man who served in Pol.Rgt. Schlanders (among others) and is captioned:

'12.2.1945 Kaserne d. regt. Tagliamento (Undino)'

I am wondering if anyone would know if this could be the base location for the Sprinckstub led Freiwilligen-Polizei-Gebirgs-Jäger-Bataillon „Tagliamento“ ?

Thanks for checking.

Hi
this is the "Caserma Di Prampero" barracks in Udine, during the war and still now the barracks of the "Julia" mountain division/brigade. During the German occupation from late 1943 to 1945 it was the base of the RSI "Tagliamento" Rgt. and also of the spin-off Freiwilligen-Polizei-Gebirgs-Jäger-Bataillon "Tagliamento".

Hello
Upon further verification, I confirm that the photo you posted shows the inner court of the Di Prampero barracks in Udine, where the Italian “Tagliamento” mountain regiment was based; this was an Italian RSI unit, although placed under the control of the BdO beim HSSPF Adriatisches Küstenland due to the peculiar situation of the OZAK, and Sprinckstub was its Verbindingsoffizier or Beratungsoffizier.
As explained above the Freiwilligen-Polizei-Gebirgs-Jäger-Bataillon “Tagliamento” led by Sprinckstub was a separate unit, whose links with the Italian regiment of the same name are not very clear; this unit was also based in Udine but apparently in different barracks, it seems that it was in the “Cavarzerani” barracks on the city eastern outskirts.
