Re: British tank question
AFAIK, yes. I don't have my copy of Chamberlain and Ellis handy, but the UK generally made a CS version of tanks to fire smoke rounds for their cruisers.
Re: British tank question
The book of Chamberlain and Ellis does not mention such a modification CS of the tank Cruiser Mk III.

Re: British tank question
"World War Two Tanks", Orbis 1976, by Eric Grove, says that some Mark IVs were armed with the 3.7-inch, but like Chamberlain and Ellis does not mention the Mark III as being. Not much help I know sorry but I'm not a tankie.

Re: British tank question
According to the Bellona Military Vehicle Print, Number 20 there were "a limited number "of CS A13 built as the Tank Mark IVA CS. There was a series of articles on the A13 in Military Modelling Magazine some years ago but my copies are not to hand, perhaps someone has easy access to the series.

Re: British tank question
One more question.
What howitzer were armed cruiser tank Mk IV CS, 3-inch or 3,7 inch?
Chamberlain's book talks about 3,7-inch, and Bellona book says about 3-inch?
It seems to me that there is a mistake in Chamberlain's book, which is now used by other authors even visually, these howitzers are too different.

Re: British tank question
Did you bother to read the text or did you just look at that chart and drawing ? I suggest that when you read the text you'll find that I wasn't just making it up.

Re: British tank question
I speak English very badly, so I cannot understand what our differences are.
Mk III CS did not exist, there was only Mk IV CS.
Is that correct?

Re: British tank question
Funny, but it looks like that page does mention Mark IVA C.S.
Sorry, I see what you were saying now. No, IIRC only the three prototypes and 65 Cruiser Tank Mark III (A.13 Mark I) were completed. I do not believe a C/S version was built, but it was for the Cruiser Tank Mark IV (A.12 Mark II).

Re: British tank question
A good point regarding the howitzer calibre. The 1938-40 war establishment (WE) tables included details of ammunition and only refer to 3-inch for the CS tanks in the Armoured Regiment WE and the Armoured Brigade RASC Company.

Yes, of course Mk IVA CS.Richard Anderson wrote: ↑05 Jan 2021, 23:56Funny, but it looks like that page does mention Mark IVA C.S.
I have simplified the name since the main question was Mk III or Mk IV.
Re: British tank question
However, the howitzer on the Mk I and Mk II tanks differs from the howitzer on the Mk IV - Mk VI tanks.Gary Kennedy wrote: ↑06 Jan 2021, 03:02A good point regarding the howitzer calibre.
