As part of the Allied occupation force, the cruiser Nisshin and five destroyers arrived and landed shore parties. Can anyone identify which destroyers were involved. They would have been from the 2nd Special Service Squadron. Many thanks in advance.

Hello jerryasher,

According to War Diary of 2nd Special Duty Fleet / December 1918, Nisshin, Kashiwa, Momo, Ume, Kusu and Kash arrived at Istanbul on 6 December 1918.

On 13 November 1918:
Nisshin: on the way from Colombo to Istanbul
Kashiwa: at Alexandria
Momo, Ume Kusu and Kashi: at Talant

Many thanks fontessa;---My source was a 100 year history of Turkish-Japanese Relations written by a Turk. Sorry for my ignorance---do you know where Talant is? Finally does the War Diary tell us anything about the four Japanese manned ships of the British--the destroyers Kanran and Sendan and the two trawlers? These four were turned over to Japan in mid to late 1917---but as not part of the Japanese built destroyers --sort of fall out of discussion. Again many thanks and stay safe.

Thank you Fontessa: in re Kanran etc. Are the dates in the diary the day they were returned to the British? or received from? Yours is the most precise data I have seen. I have the English names of the trawlers--but would have to look it up. Again many thanks.

橄欖 and 栴檀 were returned to U.K. at Plymouthon on 17 January 1919. As for 東京 and 西京, there was no description in the diary.

On 1 April 1919, the unit nams were changed as the below.
10th Destroyer Division → 22nd Destroyer Division ( (Kaba Class DDs, Katsura, Kaede, Ume, Kusu)
11th Destroyer Division → 23rd Destroyer Division (Kaba Class DDs, Sakaku, Kashiwa, Mats, Sugi)
15th Destroyer Division → 24th Destroyer Division (Momo Class DDs, Momo, Kashi, Hinoki, Yanagi)

Thank you Fontesssa; and thanks for the update on the renumbering of Destroyer Divisions. Picked up Momo's change as it showed up at Hong Kong in late June as DesDiv 24.
