New Hugh Page Taylor book

#1

Post by jeffhan373 » 09 Oct 2020, 23:42

Hugh Page Taylor has produced books of exceptional quality and lasting merit on the armed forces of the Third Reich and its allies since the 1960s. Hugh's works are always impeccably researched and beautifully written, and every serious collector should add as many of his titles to their collection as possible.

His latest volume covers the German occupation of Norway 1940 -1945, with special emphasis on Norwegian collaboration with the Germans.

The book, "Foerergarden", was scheduled to be published by Roger Bender this year, but after Roger's death its future was uncertain. It is still not known if Bender Publishing will continue, or, if it does, what it will look like. Meanwhile Hugh has taken it on himself to self-publish the book and it should be ready for publication in the not too distant future.

It's not clear how the book will be distributed worldwide, but I'll keep adding to this post as I get updates. A scan of the current version of the cover is attached below. Those interested in this subject please take note...

I've seen some of Hugh's research and material on this book. As with all his books it is indeed a must have for any serious student on World War 2. Can't wait for it to come out in it's final form.

Excellent news! I corresponded actively with Hugh in the 1960's and 70's when he told me about his research on the Norwegian collaborationist organizations. Ever since then I have been waiting for him to have the time to put his research in writing and now is moment. Hopefully he has more books in the pipeline.

Hugh, if you read this: best regards from your old friend in Finland!

Oh man....what an attractive cover. Thanks for getting the word out on this. I have every book in English on Quisling so this will be a great compliment. I suspect it may be expensive so better start saving up now. I saw an old movie titled “Vidkun Quisling’s Hirdmenn” (not English translated so had no idea what film was about other than maybe these very guard units with various scenes of Norwegian cultural life during that time period). A strange film to a non-Norwegian of the so called post-modern era.

Over 50 years of contributions to this field of study and this great gentleman, an icon of our community, is still at it.

A heartfelt salute for Hugh Page Taylor. And to his longtime friend and colleague, the great Roger Bender (1940-2020).

I will whole heartedly agree with Mike here. These two men are among the leaders of this hobby. Sadly we have lost Roger, but I will never forget the day I bought the first three volumes of Hugh's Organization and History of the Waffen SS by Bender Pub. In regards to Mr. Taylor's upcoming book, I have been researching the Nasjonal Samling for decades since David Littlejohn published his works. Needless to say this is a much forgotten subject. Unlike the Third Reich, information about its leaders, uniforms and history is very hard to come by. I am pretty well versed in its leaders, but so much more needs to be discovered and I welcome this publication as a new start into this interesting aspect of WWII Europe. I also welcome any correspondence from fellow NS researchers to share information, photos etc.

Just a quick update on the status of this upcoming book. Mr Taylor advises that the final chapters etc are now in review and it should be back from the Publisher sometime around March 2021. This should be a masterpiece about the NS etc. You will want to add this one to your library.

A few days I was fortunate to see a prototype of the book with sample text and sample photos. The production and format looks excellent as I already know that the amazing content will be too. A must have book I am very eagerly awaiting next year.

I am really happy and grateful for the kind words and interest shown in my book about Quisling's bodyguard. When my dear friend (since 1966) and publisher (since 1969) Roger Bender died in January I really thought that was the end of this book: Roger had received most of the chapters by then and had started work on it and would have done his usual wonderful work. But by chance I discovered that a neighbour of mine here in Melbourne had written a wonderful book (nothing to do with WW2!) and realised that I could go ahead and self publish with local talent. So it was that first I found a designer (also interested in military matters), then a printer and finally an editor/proof-reader and this very talented and professional team has worked wonders on what is a complicated project (I'd estimate around 500 pages and 750 images). I've opted for a larger format than the classic "Bender book" and hope this will be well received.

I hope the book will be available my March and that I will be able to spread the word to anyone possibly interested in it: so I am delighted and grateful to those who have kindly contributed about it to this thread.

Norway is a wonderful country and I was fortunate enough to be posted there for all of 1965 to train for my future career - not in writing, but insurance! Evenings were spent in libraries and museums and advertisements in newspapers allowed me to add wonderful reference to my library.

Ironically, Covid-19 and over a year's delay in being able to publish what I know about Foerergarden have had a positive effect on the book. That is because I was able to devote most of my spare time under lock down in 2020 to working on the text, contacting those who had helped me (mainly in Norway) in the past to see what outstanding questions could be answered and generally seek to learn more. This turned out to be most fruitful and new contacts were established and the book will now benefit from the wonderful new material (facts and images) I did not dream back in December 2019 I would ever be able to find.

It is a highly specialised subject, but this book has given me the opportunity to tell and illustrate more than just the story of a small elite unit that grew from two dozen to four (admittedly weak) companies between its creation on 1 February 1942 to the end of WW2 in Norway on 8 May 1945: it has been with great pleasure and satisfaction that I have been able to put on record Quisling, the German invasion and occupation of Norway and Norwegian collaboration.

I will be happy to keep the readers of this excellent Forum up-to-date on progress and would naturally appreciate it if they could spread the word.

My best wishes to you all, keep fit and well and a Happy New Year!

Hugh

Just to advise that there has been a short delay in that I had the amazing pleasure and good fortune to examine over 2,000 documents I had not been able to study before. My amazing and incredibly patient book designer, Luke, has courageously agreed to include the changes and additions this has allowed me to make and has now started work on what must be a final revision. So I now hope to have the book ready for the printer in April and have it available in June.

Self-publishing is virgin territory for me and important decisions have to be taken.

Any advice from those kind enough to read this would be greatly appreciated: for example, what would be preferred?

- hardback or paperback
- to order copies printed here in Australia or made available by P.O.D.?

Once the book is available, It would be a great pleasure to receive feedback (especially corrections and additions) via this great Forum! I've never worked so hard on a book, and would be very grateful to anyone who can add to and/or correct my work. My plan is to share all and any additional facts (words as well as images) I may be fortunate enough to receive with those who have a copy of the book. That is the least I can do and may even allow for a revised and expanded 2nd edition.

Thanks to all for your interest.

HPT

P.S. to my old friend Markus in Finland: Sorry to be slow in getting back to you - I will a.s.a.p.!
