That’s interesting. More to the man than most know - I admit I only am familiar with him from July 20 Bomb episode and do not know about his other role in OKW . Yes Sid, this sounds like a good book for translation.
Another one I’d like to see in translation is Ulrich
Herbert’s book on Werner Best.

Hi J. Duncan,

Another tidbit on Fromm.

According to Admiral Jesko von Puttkamer, Hitler’s naval adjutant, in 1918 Martin Bormann had been a front-dodging orderly at the depot of 55th Light Field Artillery Regiment at Naumber/Saale at the same time as Fromm was on the staff there. Whether Bormann ever actually had to polish Fromm’s boots is unclear, but Puttkamer noted a particular hostility on his part towards the general. It is not clear if Bormann had any influence over Fromm's arrest and execution near the end of the war.

Cheers,

Sid.

Whats the rarest or hardest to find book the members in this forum have read or own? There are some real gems out there biography wise that can be difficult to get hold of. Think mine would be the Ley bio by Smelser.

I am also looking for more on OGruf Werner Best. Max Williams' SS Elite has a good chapter on him. However not any detail on his time in Paris. Why did he transfer from the Police to Diplomatic core?

Have to look into Mr. Herbert's book.

Herbert's book surely goes into greater depth, but here's an excerpt from my Leaders of the SS & German Police (R. James Bender Publishing, 2006) that may help a bit to answer your questions.
01.10.1939 -25.07.1940 Chef of Amt II (Verwaltung und Recht/Administration and Law) and Leiter of Amtsgruppe IV E (polizeiliche Spionageabwehr/Inland) in the Reichssicherheitshauptamt. Succeeded by Dr. jur. Hans Nockemann due to disagreements with Heydrich about how the RSHA should be administered. Heydrich disapproved of Best’s conventional ideas and his preference for the State over the Party. In a letter to Kurt Daluege dated 30.10.1941, Heydrich stated he broke with Best because his former deputy was too judicially minded.
01.10.1939-00.12.1939 (geschäftsführender) Stellvertreter to the Chef of the Reichssicherheitshauptamt and Leiter of the Abteilung Polizeirecht (Department for Police Law) of the University of Berlin.
00.04.1940-00.05.1940 Responsible for organization of Sipo/SD Einsatzgruppen in Norway and France.
13.06.1940-00.00.1942 Entered Wehrmacht service, assigned as a Kriegsverwaltungschef.
13.06.1940-00.07.1940 Infantry training with Ersatz-Bataillon/Infanterie-Regiment 15 (Friedberg/Hessen)
03.08.1940-00.00.194_ Representative of the Reichsführer-SS und Chef der deutschen Polizei to the Reichsministerium des Innern.
01.08.1940-25.10.1940 Militärverwaltungschef and Leiter of the Abteilung Verwaltung (Administrative Department) attached to the Chef der Militärverwaltung in Frankreich (Chief of the Military Administration in France [General der Infanterie Alfred Streccius]) and Leiter of the Abteilung Verwaltung in Militärverwaltungsbezirk (Military Administrative District) Paris.
25.10.1940-10.06.1942 Leiter of the Chefgruppe Verwaltung attached to the Militärbefehlshaber in Frankreich (General der Infanterie Otto von Stülpnagel).
01.03.1941-00.00.1942 Stellvertreter des Chefs des Verwaltungsstabes (Deputy to the Chief of the Administrative Staff [under Militärverwaltungschef Dr. Jonathan Schmid]) assigned to the Stab des Militärbefehlshabers in Frankreich, Paris. Succeeded Fritz Pfeffer von Salomon.
00.08.1941-00.09.1941 Fact-finding tour, with visits to Brussels, Den Haag, Oslo, Copenhagen, and Prague, to observe occupation policies in those areas.
Autumn 1941-00.00.1943 Co-editor of the periodical Reich-Volksordnung-Lebensraum (RVL).
10.08.1942-00.10.1942 Assigned for instruction to various departments of the Auswärtigen Amt (German Foreign Office) in Berlin. Released from Wehrmacht administrative duties and appointed as a Ministerialdirektor in the Auswärtigen Amt on 03.11.1942).
26.10.1942-04.05.1945 Bevollmächtigter des Reiches in Dänemark (Reich Plenipotentiary in Denmark) and temporary head of the German Embassy in Copenhagen (actually took up the assignment on 05.11.1942, succeeding Cecil Renthe-Fink. Tasked with implementing a complete transformation of the Danish Government, including the placement of Danish Nazis in its cabinet. He failed completely in the latter, but was able to secure the dismissal of Vilhelm Buhl, the Socialist Prime Minister, and the creation of a new, more Germany-friendly government under Erik Scavenius. Scavenius, a politician with no support from either Denmark’s parliament nor the Danish population was precisely the sort of German puppet that Hitler wished for. Best persuaded the Scavenius government to introduce the Power of Attorney Bill, an enabling act giving the State authority to legally implement emergency powers for the maintenance of security and order.
Best wishes,
~ Mike

Has anyone The Good Nazi by Dan van der Vat? And if so can you give a verdict.

Thanks

The Good Nazi by Dan van der Vat

I read the book some years ago. I can recommend it,
but not being an expert on the subject of Speer I found it useful to buy every book on Speer I could
because each author gives their own slant on things even with evidence that the authors present.

Its interesting
how many small interesting information you can glean from each book then piecing and
threading it all I found I got an much clearer picture of the man and his actions and accounts
of the time in his involvement not only during WWII but before and even after.

Thank you would you pick this as a first one to read on him instead of the one by Gitta Sereny?

I really enjoy Gitta Sereny's book on Speer also.
They are both good but you should read both.
Maybe buy one and get the other in the library?

Gitta Sereny now deceased was obsessed with Speer but
she admits that she had a great liking for the man. It was hard for
her in many ways but in the end she feels well I think you should read
and find out for yourself.

There are or were on youtube interviews with her.

Those two books were great reading and I couldn't put them down
including Speers own books.

I think I have 11 or 12 speer books. All worth reading.

Now reflecting on which book to read first I think I would start with Speer's own books first to give you an grounding of the man and what he
sees himself and what he did or didn't do.

I think a biography of Backe was planned by Gesine Gerhard but think it was cancelled

Not cancelled per se - she published “Nazi Hunger Politics : Food in the Third Reich”. There is a lot on Darre and Backe in this book and she used Ursula Backe’s diary as a source. His biography is meshed with a book on Nazi food policy.
