In occupied Poland, if we exclude the confiscated by the Germans factories, the economy was supervised (but not controlled) by the pre-war Polish administration. That included, among others the Polish IRS and the Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Most of the pre-war laws and regulations were still in force - with some exceptions, selling food, restaurants were tightly regulated for obvious reasons.
To start a business you had to purchase a "patent" - the right to conduct total business transactions up to a limit. The more transactions the more costly the patent. Except that the bureaucracy was minimal. For this reason, I think, it could be argued that it was easier than that today.

But actually, it's not about the differences between the Nazis and today's Poland. It's about differences between pre-war Poland and today's Poland.

I have met these guys. On 9 May 2015 I was in Berlin at the Soviet Cemetery. Besides obvious Russians commemorating VE day there were all sorts of stands manned by fruitcakes. One was arguing that the EU was the fourth Reich. Looked more than a bit loony, but on reflection it is a common theme of Brexiteers too...

So, why not have the Poles push for more deregulation within the European Union?

Who is going to do it? The Polish Libertarians (or rather national Libertarians) are at about ten percent. The two dominant parties are copycats of the American democrats and the American RINOs. So it's not going to happen.
