JSC Memos

#1

Post by rcocean » 08 Apr 2021, 17:19

Hello Everybody.

I'm trying to find a copy of a joint chiefs of Staff memo sent to FDR in 1944. I can't find it at the FDR library website or in the Official histories. Does anyone have an idea where I can get a copy of it?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response. Maybe this isn't the right place to ask, but its

JCS 718/1, 16 Mar 44, title: Effect of "Unconditional Surrender" Policy on German Morale.

We have FDR's response on April 1st but its not printed in the Foreign Relations Documentary history. Nor does Matloff go into much detail in his "Strategic Planning for Coalition warfare 1943-1944". A search of the FDR library files turned up zero. And in general, I'm just wondering how you access the JSC files. The national archives are confusing.

Not a clue how to access all that. Been running a construction business the past 27 years and not been able to do real research.

Marshall was not Chairman, Leahy was. See:

NARA II, RG 218, Records of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Records of the Chairman 1942-70, formerly security-classified correspondence, memorandums, and messages of JCS Chairmen Adm. William D. Leahy, 1942-48.

Much thanks. This should help me a lot in getting a copy of the memo.

I looked at the Leahy book. "I was there". He's rather vague about the subject. which is true for almost everything.

That is constrained by being an autobiography and by postwar secrecy. You would do better probably with O'Brien's The Second Most Powerful Man in the World.

Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered it.
