Woman role with Morse Code?

#1

Post by Quast » 13 Apr 2021, 00:07

Hi,
I saw a poster from WWII for a woman sending a message with Morse device. I want to know did woman played an important role for sending messages and cracking Nazi messages ? Where they take their place ? near the front line or other place?

Thank you EwenS for the is information. This is general information for Britain women troops. I need to know event/s where woman changed the conflict side by cracking Nazi message. This kind of jobs where take it place in war field ? I'm talking about the position on the ground? Look at the poster I saw it before. I don't know to which country it belong.

That doesn't show a woman in the field, it shows a telegrapher with no background. The ULTRA program helped the Allies no end. Worth a look: http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/ETO/Ultra/

To avoid confusion: When Patrick started Hyperwar he dug into the existing material and listed it for each topic. Some titles have links, for others you would have to track down a copy or search elsewhere on the net.

This poster show woman using Morse code device. US media used this kind of posters to encourage women to join army. I looking for a stories about those women in the WWII. For example Winifred Roberts in Britain. Do we have in USA army stories about cracking/breaking German codes by women?

Wouldn't confuse a recruiting poster for someone obviously working a morse key (something code-breakers rarely if ever did) with some deep mysterious code breaking. If you're interested in women, on the US side, with codebreaking, suggest you look up one Agnes Driscoll.

Though she never put on a uniform.

This kind of character is exactly what I looking for. But as mentioned in wiki:
Driscoll and her team were unable to make progress in solving the German device. That was partly due to her unwillingness to use machine support or a mathematical approach, but she also refused the help of British code breakers from Bletchley Park who had traveled to the United States to advise her.
This two lines moved her out from my list. Do you know more characters like her? A character worked to break the Nazi codes and did that? I'm trying to collect more information and details about women that worked in this field. Where did break Nazi codes and saved people.
