Ju52 Floatplanes

#1

Post by Andy H » 06 Apr 2002, 22:51

In answering a question for Victor, I came across a listing for Ju52 Floatplanes operated by Kampgruppe zBv 108 within Luftflotte 5 in June 1941.

Does anyone have any info/pics on this plane

The "Ju52 See" was a ordinary Ju52 which got floaters added, and the designation "Ju52/3mdi" These planes were sold as civilian passenger planes, but when the war started the Luftwaffe got control over those not delivered. Some were also captured in Norway and Denmark.

Hello!
I really don`t know, but it is most likely from Kampfgruppe z.b.V.108.
This unit gathered planes from various KG`s before the invasion, and was the only one to have Ju52 see during this attack.
The unit markings may belong to another Kapmfgruppe, even if it was operated by z.b.V.108 at the moment the photo was taken. There has been found a Ju 52 in Norway with different markings on each side of the plane, so it seems like many of these "Gruppen" were put together in a hurry!

Hi Andy

Just thought you'd like the following pics taken from 'The Warplanes of the Third Reich', by William Green.

Ju-52 Seaplane Version

#7

Post by Durand » 09 Jul 2003, 17:39

Hallo,

It is my understanding that a seaplane version of the Ju-52 was flown during the war. I would like to learn a bit more about this aircraft. How many were built? What was their purpose? How was their performance? Where did they operate? Who were some of the more famous pilots that flew them?

Regards,

Durand

The original Ju 52 was a single engined aircraft and one of these c/n 4006 was sold to Canadian Airways and could be fitted with wheeled, skid or float undercarriage.

When developed into the familiar 3 engined form the ability to fit wheel float or skid undercarriages was maintained. Many Ju 53/3m's were taken over from Lufthansa at the start of the war. Those fitted with floats were designated Ju 52/3mW. These float equipped transports were very useful in ferrying troops and supplies to Norway during the German invvasion.

The successes in Norway led to the Fokker factory being ordered to build sets of floats from 1940 to mid 1942. The Ju 52/3m was not built as a floatplane but rather they were fitted with floats as and when needed.
In float form they operated in Norway, Crete Greece, Aegean and to N. Africa

Used by Seetransportstaffel 1,2,3,4,5

Ju52/3m g7e float plane:

eight:15675lbs empty, 242oo lbs loaded
max speed: 158mph sea level, 163 mph 3000ft
ceiling: 16580 ft
max. range 930 miles at 8200 ft
span: 95ft 10 ins
length: 62ft 4ins
height 17ft 9ins.

This could help. The Ju-52/1m began life with one engine and was developed as a floatplane for a potential market in Canada. The design was further developed to bid for orders from Sweeden before the war as a torpedo bomber, up against the HP Hampden.

Would these aircraft have had the standard 70/71, or the maritime 72/73 upper surface camouflage? Hard to tell from the photos, I think...

Thanks Stril,

Is that a letter H on the elevator, or some sort of symbol? Never seen letters marked on elevators before!

Hello
The one you see is two vertical stripes with the digit 4 inbetween the lines. The left elevator has a similar one, two vertical lines, but the digit 3.
