Another pillbox at 58.564, 31.28289:

A question: there were bean-shaped hollows on the corners - what are they for?

Let's move from Novgorod towards Staraya Russa. A typical Ringstand at 58.01157, 31.29733:

DSCF1638.JPG

The interesting detail is the protective wall in front of entrance:

DSCF1639.JPG

A shelter is located just in 40 m, it also has protective wall. Fully flooded:

Quite an interesting bunker at 58.00414, 31.31981:

DSCF1649 Предположительно немецкий бункер связи, 58.00414, 31.31981.JPG

There was a vertical hollow in one wall with steel pipe inside. Antenna lead?

DSCF1651.JPG

The bunker has the name cast in concrete above the entrance - Mottenburg:

DSCF1663.JPG

Google said there is a pub with this name in Hannover. Probably the constructors visited that pub before the war.

Internal view. There are 2 niches on walls. Communication center? Command bunker?

Unknown niches on the entrance side:

Crew shelter in 25 m from the Ringstand. The words on the last picture mean "War echo".

I would be glad to get your answers and comments.

A question: what those square niches were for? I saw many Ringstands, but never met such niches:
Looks like the usual metal rail (Führungsschiene) was unavailable when the bunker was poured.
The niches are for embedding the rail's anchors into the concrete.

But there is metal rail on the second opening of the bunker - it's quite standard and narrow, but the niches are located much lower. I can't imagine how they might help mount the rail.

This is what I mean. Note the anchor.

Anyway, I do not see how anchors might be fixed into those niches - they are located much lower than the ring, and there is a layer of concrete between niches and the ring.

The rail shown on the drawing would have been placed directly above those niches.
It is a standard element for a Ringstand, although not always present.
The special Ringstand mountings for periscopes or machine guns were placed onto this rail.

As you can see below, there is a gap between rail and wall.

It seems, that in example in Novgorod we have 2 steel rings - one installed on the top, and another not installed, in lower position.

Some more pictures after recent trip. Part of the Panther Stellung north-east of Pskov. A stronghold on the height with trenches, firing positions, probably MG nests etc., all dug in soil. But there were several typical German constructions made of concrete bricks. The Germans made shelters, observation posts, pillboxes etc. out of those bricks. Normally such objects had roofs made of cast concrete with steel beams, but in this case the roofs were made of wood and soil - maybe due to lack of concrete or lack of time. Most likely the wood was used by local inhabitants after the war for construction or just as firewood, so now we may see those shelters "dissected" - I never saw roofless shelters like those before:

Co-ordinates are mentioned in file names.

Hello to everyone, now I would like to ask you about a couple of German objects from Novgorod region.

Here is the first one - rather simple rectangular box made of traditional German concrete bricks with cast concrete roof:

2 windows - not embrasures, but exactly windows, both of different size and shape:

DSCF7436.JPG

The most remarkable detail is of course a corner doorway. My idea is it was designed to bring in and out by hand some bulky items like munition crates or something alike. Don't you have any other ideas of the purpose of such a doorway? And was it Ad hoc design of field fortification or any kind of Regelbau type?
