Re: German observation and barrage balloons
Lots of interesting pictures, for anyone with a passion for lighter than air military craft, but more questions than answers.
Balloon barrages were to deter low level attacks and were a passive element of the air defence of many nations. There is quite a lot of information about air defence balloons. More about the British and the German. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Balloon_Command
https://warfarehistorynetwork.com/2016/ ... hp?t=58803
Observation balloons were a feature of the battlefields of the first world war, but much less common in land battles of the second world war. In the First World war Britain's Royal Flying Corps included a balloon wing within each Brigade https://www.westernfrontassociation.com ... loonatics/ The RAF gave a low priority to army co-operation and observation balloons were discontinued in British service after the end of the first world war.
Can anyone post any information about the organisation and use of German observation balloons.

Post #92 was a Parseval-Sigsfeld "Drachen" Called "sausages" by the British - hence a launch site giving its name to Sausage valley on the Somme, and near to it by the logic of British humour "Mash Valley."

Hi Sheldrake
Only just saw this when I started looking for info on the balloon company of ID 4 in the Polish campaign.
You will find the partial organisation of an observation balloon company in Niehorster's online book on the organisation of 1 and 2 Welle infantry division (the artillery regiment): p 34. Alas, it would appear that the author was only able to establish the numbers and types of vehicles used but not the personnel and other equipment.
