German Field Hospital-Salerno

#1

Post by MTO123 » 02 Aug 2021, 19:59

I'm conducting research on American forces at Salerno and I am interested in the German field hospital at/near Materdomini (the town of Caposele is also used as a location), Italy. From what I can tell it was run by 2/16 medical company, which, correct me if I am wrong, is the 2d Company, 16th Medical Battalion. I am interested in how to learn more about this hospital, if there are any recommended relevant sources, or if anyone on this board has any information about this rather obscure subject.

:welcome:

That would be a hospital of 16th Panzer Division. Did you check NARA rolls ?

Hi,

I'd agree with Greg. This is from the 16th Pz Div files for 1943:
16 Pz Div - Medical units - Sep 43.JPG
Those are two motorised medical companies on the right and three motorised ambulance platoons on the left.

I'm interested in any more details of 2/16 Company that you could provide.

Regards

Tom

Thanks, already learned something. Below is the description of the Hospital, I do not know what the abbreviations mean. Note that there was a second hospital (1/16)10 km north of Materdomini at Santangelo dei Lombardi. That one is described as the Mobile Medical Company, assuming from the previous post that it was the first mobile medical company. What little I have from allied sources describes the hospital at Materdomini as a "medical aid station (dressing station)" I have not yet had a chance to look at NARA holdings, if there is any area you suggest looking at, I will do so when their current reopening scheme allows me access.

Hi,

NARA source for 16 Panzer Division for 1943 is T315 R681.

You might want to post up that document on this thread which is all about German medical equipment and documents:

viewtopic.php?f=76&t=174560

There is also a section on here which specialises in translating from the German:

viewforum.php?f=36

And I've found the abbreviation H.V.Pl = Heeresverbandplatz = army field dressing station (according to a US book about German military terminology).

Someone on that medical thread might know how the medical companies were organised.

Regards

Tom
