Returning to the battle of Nikolayev in 1941. Below is a summary of POWs and equipment captured by the 1 Panzer Group in 2 weeks (9-24 August 1941). According to this page XXXXVIII Corps captured about 14,500 prisoners (mostly at Nikolayev and Kherson). A much larger number (more than 50,000) were captured by III and XIV Corps in the Dnieper bend at Krivoy Rog, Dnepropetrovsk and Zaporozhie.

According to the record in the 1 PzGr's war diary made on 17 August in the battle for Nikolayev 6 655 POWs were captured which belonged to 16 various divisions. That included one general (who was he?).
From daily records of the 1st PzGr the numbers of POWs reported by the XXXXVIII Corps were as follows:
13.8 - 1000
14.8 -
15.8 - 1652
16.8 - 1060
17.8 - 2300
18.8 - 6087
19.8 - 478
20.8 - 1000

Hi, Art, thank for your detailed additional information on battle of Nikolayev, that mean no such big kassel at that naval base, just general pursuit action along the bend of Dneiper.

BTW, regarding operation of III and XIV motorized corps, it captured Krivoy Rog, Dnepropetrovsk, I think it operation also included the capture of Dniprodzerzhynsk, Ocharkov, Cherkasy, Nikopol, and Pavlograd, Right ? Thank

P.S. I see Soviet army organization history, mentions Soviet Black Sea Fleet also used Ocharkov and Odessa as auxiliary naval bases to avoid concentration of Black Sea Fleet vessal in one or two naval bases

AGS war diary of the same day, 25.8.41 (T311 R256), gives a higher PoW figure for PG1 over the same period (8-25.9.41): 83,596.
Daily records of the 1 PzGr give the same numbers of prisoners and equipment captured by the morning of 25.8.41 as quoted on this page (189,453 POWs, 3162 tanks etc). The number reported by the morning of 6.8. was 108,953. That means about 80,000 POWs captured on 6-24.8.41. That must include several thousand prisoners taken during the final mop-up of the Uman pocket. Probably, that's the source of discrepancy here.

is battle of Zhitomir which German claimed it was encirclement battle,
Attack of German III.PzK (mostly 13.PzD) on Zhitomir and XXXXVIII.PzK (mostly 11.PzD) on Berdichev resulted in encirclement of parts of 147RD and 206RD from 7RC and 199RD from 49RC.
Hello, GregSingh, I see Askey Nigel book Barbarossa IIA mentions had a encirclement battle at Vinnista, and was carried out by 1.Gebirgs Division and the latter took 10,000 POW.

I was talking about Zhitomir - Berdichev encirclement on the July 9th. See map below.

A likely individual is major general N.D. Gol'tsev - chief of armored forces of the 18 Army, who was taken prisoner on 15 August 1941.

Hello, Art, thank for your additonal information. But I check generals.dk website, it mentions he was arrested in Oct 1941, and was executed next year, it does'nt mention whether killed by German or Soviet, but it seemed being killed by Soviet.Thank

Gol'tsev managed to escape from captivity but was arrested and sentenced by the NKVD then.

The fifth chapter of my translation of Oskar Munzel's Panzer Tactics, published by Casemate, deals with the German advance towards and seizure of Nikolayev in 1941.

Hi everyone,

Are there any figures on the number of prisoners taken by the Hungarians at Nikolayev ?
