Lazarett Taganrog
Lazarett Taganrog
Hi All,
Thank-you in advance for any help you provide.
My Grandfather (since deceased) was a German Army Doctor during the 2nd World War. His name was Dr. Med. Otto F. Rabe II I believe the highest rank he held in the Army was either assistantartz or oberartz. From some of our conversations I remember him saying he was stationed at a field hospital in Taganrog.
I am trying to find exactly which unit he was assigned to?
can you help?
Otto Rabe IV

Re: Lazarett Taganrog
Do you know when he was stationed in Taganrog? 1943?
It could have been Armee-Feldlazarett 541.
It could have been Armee-Feldlazarett 541.
Re: Lazarett Taganrog
Dokis79,
I believe so. He told me that when the war started he was assigned to a unit that moved thru Moldovia and the southern part of Ukraine. He also mentioned Cherson briefly and then being moved to a field hospital in Taganrog and was there until sometime in 1943 - almost 4 years in Ukraine.
The story he told me involved the Russians coming and taking back that area and that many German people died and/or fled - so I am assuming that meant he was there in 1943.
How did you arrive at the understanding that it might be Armee-Feldlazarett 541?
Thank-you by-the-way!
Otto

Re: Lazarett Taganrog
I saw mention in other research that it could have been SS 111 Lazarett-Taganrog as well?
Re: Lazarett Taganrog
If you are a family member just ask for his military records here:
https://www.bundesarchiv.de/EN/Content/ ... en-en.html
You will know for sure where he was, when and with which unit.
If Edelweiss shield in a box was from his uniform (can't see it on the photo as it was worn on right sleeve) at some point he was in mountain troops.
Was he from Germany proper or perhaps Austria or Sudeten German ?

GregSingh,
Here is what I know - and I wished I was smart enough to have paid more attention and asked more questions while he was still alive. Live and learn -right. And - that box was what my Oma gave me after he died in 1994. I was still in the Army and she thought it made most sense to give it to me.
He was born in Raztlingen (Anhalt-Saxony) went to medical school in Insbruck Austria. He spent some time in Wurzburg just before he went to Romania/Moldovia.
Thank-you for the link!

Re: Lazarett Taganrog
Armee-Feldlazarett was part of 6th army in the spring and summer 1943. Here's an OOB. 6th army covered the Taganrog area.ottorabe wrote: ↑13 Sep 2021, 19:34Dokis79,

I don't think there would have been any SS troops in that area in 1943. I believe SS troops only fought there in 1941 (Viking, LSSAH), and maybe 1942.
Re: Lazarett Taganrog
That order of battle diagram was super informational - thank you!
Re: Lazarett Taganrog
BAMA has got the Personalakte of 2 officers with his name:
- Rabe, Otto, geb. 24.3.1922
- Rabe, Otto, Dr. phil. geb. 18.12.1900
Was one of them your grandfather?

No - My Opa was born on August 27th, 1914 in Ratzlingen Anhalt Saxony Germany. He was awarded both an MD and a PHD (in infectious diseases) from Wurzburg I think. I am sure about the 1914.
Surprising that there were so many Otto Rabes -
