Useful sources for Russian books

Post by Der Alte Fritz » 14 Sep 2021 16:09

This blog has an interesting collection of artillery books:
https://gercenovec.livejournal.com/?skip=10

including "Artillery Supply in the GPW 1941-1945" and the four volumes of Planatov "Operations of the Soviet Armed Froces in GPW" 1958

Planatov's volumes look like they have useful tabular data. Wish I could read Russian, but some bits will be worth translating.

Cheers

Remember that this is a very early canon of Soviet operations and between 1985 and 1989 there was a debate in VIZH which added further ones which leads to the current list in
Fesʹkov, V. I, K. A Kalashnikov, and V. I Golikov. 2003.
http://militera.lib.ru/h/feskov_vi01/index.html

Then David Glantz around 2000 claims that even this list misses some operations and adds to it with his 8 volume Forgotten Battles series.

Tried some translation. Ouch, lots of work. The "text" is actually an image in the scanned file. So entered the characters one for one in Bing translator.

Regarding Table 7, page 38 in volume IV:
---

The composition of the troops of the fronts as of January 10, 1945, excluding army and front rear institutions and units, is shown in Table 7
---

Number of personnel in armies
---

Number of divisions in armies
---

Average strength of rifle divisions in armies
---

Mortars 82- and 120-mm
---

Guns of greater than 76-mm caliber
---

Antitank artillery (45- and 57-mm)
---

Rocket artillery launchers (rs)
---

anti-aircraft artillery

Medium caliber

Light caliber
---

танков

tanks
---

САу

Self propelled guns

==============

The "average strength of rifle divisions" is of interest. Hard to tell with the equipment totals how much is divisional and how much is not.

Cheers

Abbyy FineReader 15 will scan the image and OCR the text from it, save at HMTL and let your browser translate it for you.

"RKKA and the Civil War in Spain, 1936-1939". First three volumes of the 8-volume publication of the Red Army's Intelligence Administration's bulletins concerning experience and Soviet involvement in the SCW are available on the website of the Russian State Military Archive:

V.A. Zhilin "System of military command organs of operational-strategic level: past, present and future", 2nd edition, 2001
https://www.voenkoma.net/download/%D0%B ... %D1%83.pdf

Looks like a slightly rewritten doctorate thesis on organization of Soviet high-level command and headquarters during the war.

Hi,
The site is working, it is not blocked. It has DDOS protection enabled attacks.
The scan there is of rather mediocre quality.
Best regards
