Pionier-Bataillon 52 - part of what?
Hi. I'm new here and i hope asking a question here is okay. (Hope this is the right sub board?)
I am in possesion of several documents from a German pionier soldier who died in Mosdok, Kaukasus on 1. nov 1942. He was in 2. komp./Pionier-Bataillon 52. I have been trying to find out which division or other unit this btl. was a part of. I can't find anything. Perhaps i am a complete idiot? Could someone help me out? Any help will be much appreciated.

It was a GHQ unit, and as such wasn't organically part of a division.

Hi. Thank you for the reply. I was not aware of GHQ units before. Did some reading up on what i could hurrily find via google. How do you know this was a GHQ unit? - and could you tell me more or point me in a direction. Also even as a GHQ unit would they not be under some sort of command higher up? They must have coordinated with someone? Is there any way of finding out? As i could understand from what i found, the history of many GHQ units are rather obscure.
Once again thank you very much,

Yes, that is almost the only info i have been able to find. Perhaps my German is lacking but i can't really tell from that, that its a GHQ unit nor does it give me any info as to which army or army group it would have been under on 1. nov. 1942, which is what i am really interested in.
Re: Pionier-Bataillon 52 - part of what?
Perhaps he died in hospital in Mosdok from wounds, because on that day, 2./Pi.Btl.52 was engaged in fighting around 50km east from Mosdok.German pionier soldier who died in Mosdok, Kaukasus on 1. nov 1942.
It was under XXXX.PzK command, released on October 30th to help 3.Panzer Division fill the gap after Soviet attack in area of old sovchoz, 2.5km south from Hill 117. (It was just NE of Ishcherskaya).
See Mosdok area on Nov. 1, 1942 map below:

And here is a page from XXXX.PzK diary (NARA T314 R962) mentioning 2./Pi.Btl.52:

Oh wow this is excellent. Thank you so much. How on earth did you dig this up? I need to practice my research skills.GregSingh wrote: ↑17 Sep 2021, 04:40Perhaps he died in hospital in Mosdok from wounds, because on that day, 2./Pi.Btl.52 was engaged in fighting around 50km east from Mosdok.German pionier soldier who died in Mosdok, Kaukasus on 1. nov 1942.

Re: Pionier-Bataillon 52 - part of what?
I actually have his death certificate from september 1944. It puts the place of death at "Kriwinossow-Mosdok" ...i can't seem to find that place? "Kriwinossow", i am sure is a German name. Any idea what the Russian name is?
Re: Pionier-Bataillon 52 - part of what?
Krivonosov was just NW of Ishcherskaya.
It does not exist anymore. You need a detailed period map to find it. I have only a Soviet one.
I circled Krivonosov, area of Hill 117, Staro- and Novo-Lednev - mentioned in diary.
