a former schoolmate of ours served as a soldier in the Bundeswehr / Marineflieger in Nordholz, and also on Helgoland, the young man was attached to the Marinefliegergeschwaders 5, a SAR ("Search and Rescue") unit.

P.S. The above documentary from 1990 is quite patriotically colored, certainly very typical for the year 1990, after the German reunification.
One should excuse the reporting at that time...
Helgoland is one of those typical German places of longing, I have visited the island only three times, once as a day traveler, and twice as a weekend visitor.
The island is a touching place, especially for people interested in history, highly recommended.

If I understand correctly, the original poster was asking about pre-WW ONE. The After the Battle # 154 contains a map and text descripping the defences during the WW 1 time frame. The armaments were significantly different from those of the 3rd Rech era.

Hello,
i´m also very interested in the fortifications of Heligoland from the end of 19th century until 1918.
The publication of Fröhle/Kühn "Hochseefestung Helgoland I" is th best documentation I could find.
But there's another one, written in German language, which has a lot of plans and old (historic) photographs: it is the official description of the "Entfestigung" (disarming, destroying)after ww1 from about 1920-22:

it's a curious thing about both plans:
the first (1937) is otherwise called "geheime Kommandosache" (means: top secret) in 1937, but it shows the situation before ww1 and before the "Entfestigung" => this plan was never "top secret": it was published in 1924 (description of disarming/destroying, "Entfestigung")
the second (1936) shows a conception of new fortifications, but without the not totally destroyed parts (like "Nord-Gruppe" and "Süd-Gruppe") and a funny thing ist "Batterie Tanganijika" on the really and totally destroyed "Haubitzen Batterie".
