Tomozuru Incident
Tomozuru Class Torpedo Boat was designed unreasonably. It was designed unreasonably. To make up for the shortage of destroyers, IJN positioned non-regulated torpedo boats (under 600 tons) as destroyer supplementary forces and packed them with weapons comparable to second - class destroyers. As a result, the position of the center of gravity was raised, and it became a so - called "top heavy state". So their stability was extremely poor. Naturally, the reward for this appeared in the form of capsizing due to stormy weather during night training outside Sasebo Port on 12 March 1934. It is a notorious "Tomozuru Incident " that causes a total of 100 casualties, including 72 KIA, including Captain IWASE Okuichi 岩瀬奥市 (48). This incident shocked the upper layers of IJN, and the stability improvement work, including the weight reduction of the onboard armament shown in 1st figure, was immediately carried out on the all Tomozuru Class torpedo boats. This included downsizing of the bridge structure. 1st figure tells us how heavily armed original she was.

Tomozuru carried a part of 杉浦支隊 Sugiura Branch to Kai Islands on 5 January 1943. On 6 January 1943, on the way back to Ambon, she was hit by an airstrike and was damaged by a nearby bomb, killed 7 and injured 7. Commanding Officer LT IMAMURA Kiyoshi 今村清 (61) survived.

LCDR (Res.) / LCDR (Res.) / CDR* Sato Choshiro 佐藤長四郎 was KIA on 24 March 1945 during the escort of Convoy Kana 304 when Tomozuru sank in the west of Amami Oshima due to the bombing of US carrier-based aircrafts. Unfortunately the number of killed and injured is unknown. 2nd firure shows Tomozuru under 58th Task Force air attack.
