November 9 in German history

Post by Hans1906 » 10 Nov 2021 11:41

9. November / „Schicksalstag“ in der deutschen Geschichte / November 9 / "Fateful day" in German history
Probably no other date in 20th century German history has stirred up emotions and provoked controversial discussions like November 9. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Reich Pogrom Night in 1938, the Hitler putsch in 1923, the November Revolution in 1918 and the failure of the March Revolution in 1848: the "fateful day" of November 9 symbolizes the hopes of the Germans, but also the path to the crimes of the Third Reich.

In a recent survey, more than 50% of the Germans questioned, no longer associated anything with the date of November 9.
Political disinterest, ignorance, or just a reflection of our time ? :?

Hans
Probably because 50% of Germans are also convinced that they are no longer allowed to speak their own opinion openly,
. . . and it is better not to say at all. . .

Thanks Holger,

you are certainly right with this statement, but the general political disinterest here in Germany, that's exactly what this survey showed as well.

What was shocking in similar surveys, that many often younger respondents knew little to nothing about the years of National Socialist regime before 1945, and just as little about the former German Democratic Republic, the DDR / GDR.
Let alone, many respondents could not even name the name and party of the current German Chancellor, etc... 8O

Enough ranting for today, have a good weekend ! :milwink:

Dame Margot Friedländer spoke live on the 9th of November 2021, in Berlin.

In my opinion, this has little to do with ranting; - rather the acceptance of reality.

Incidentally, I agree with you that I am equally amazed about the lack of historical interest of
German population. But is it possible that we and all the other members of the AHF are more
interested in technical-military history than others and therefore cannot understand this reality?

But what you posted before is of course a `Death-stroke argument´, which nips any further discussion
in the bud. But maybe it's also`news´ like this why fewer and fewer people want to deal with German history.

Cheers Holger
