They were Bulgarian steel helmets, nothing has been mentioned about Romania so far.

But there is no need to argue about it, many of the steel helmets of that time looked very similar...

This work answers many questions, most of which have remained until without answers.

Romania would order 628,000 M34s from the Dutch for use in its army and name it the M39.

Convinced Hans, or not yet ? :?

Clearly Romanians, armed with the Czech Vz/24 rifle which was their standard rifle. Admittedly the Bulgarians received some too later in the war, but their standard rifle was the Mannlicher 1895 (in various versions), supplemented by Mosin-Nagants.

Hi Hans

Thanks for the fascinating book. It is as much useful for its history of armour as anything else. However I am not sure how it can help here, given that when the book was published (1920) the two helmets in question, Dutch and Bulgarian, did not yet exist (introduced 1934 and 1936 respectively).

I'm afraid I am with the majority view here. They are clearly Romanians - even without all the other supporting evidence, the Bulgarian M36 looks very different.
