Recommended reading on the fortifications & artillery

Two new maps concerning fortifications have been published.
First concerns modern fortifications in Poland (a some kind of overview) from fortified residential sits, XIX century Prussian, Russian and Austro-Hungarian fortresses, I ww fortified lines, Polish interwar fortifications till German and Russian fortifications of II ww. On the back side of map there are very short notes concerning all depicted sites (in Polish language). Map has got 1:1.000.000 scale.

Second map depicts fortress Wrocłw (Breslau) from bastion time, XIX and XX century bunkers, shelters and infantry strong points, II ww air-raid shelters, AA batteries positions, and field fortifications build in 1944 /45 by Germans a Russians. On map there are depicted barraks, depots, shooting ranges and other military facilities. Map has got 1:20.000 scale.

I am pleased to announce that our newest book, co-authored by me and Martin Rupp, is finally available for purchase. The book, World War II German Super-Heavy Siege Guns describes the design, development, and employment of the very large-calibre siege guns built by arms manufacturers Krupp and Rheinmetall, as well as the Czech-made Skoda pieces put into service by German Army. The book discusses artillery pieces that were 28cm or larger and used to destroy fortified targets: the 80cm Railway Gun Gustav-Gerät, the 60cm and 54cm self-propelled Karl-Gerät, the 35.5cm Haubitze M1, the World War I-era 28cm Haubitze L/12 and 28cm Küstenhaubitze L/12 pieces, and of course the 42cm Gamma-Gerät. Skoda guns covered in the book are the World War I-era 42cm howitzer and 30.5cm mortars. There is also lots of unit information in the book. The book’s artwork is based on the computer-generated models of Greg Heuer, my co-author for Railway Guns of World War I. A talented 3D computer modeler, Greg’s work served as the basis of the illustrations made for the World War I railway gun book, and Greg again kindly let us use his superbly detailed computer models for this new book. Particularly impressive are Greg’s models of the pre-production prototypes of the 60cm Karl-Gerät and the two views of the 80cm Gustav-Gerät being assembled.

For anyone interested in coastal artillery on the Baltic, there is an excellent new Polish book on "Coastal Artillery on the Polish Shores: Compendium and Guide" by Jacek Jarosz (text is entirely Polish). Since Poland absorbed East Prussia and a chunk of the German Baltic coast in 1945, much of the coverage deals with German batteries from the 20th Century. It covers Polish coastal artillery in the Gdynia-Hel region to 1939, then covers post-war Polish defenses including guns, anti-ship missile sites and SAM sites. The primary focus of the book is to serve as a guide to surviving structures. There is a short survey at the beginning about the various weapons used. The book is very heavily illustrated with color photos of surviving sites. I got my copy from Fortress Books in the Netherlands.

German radar in the Netherlands 1940-1945

During the Second World War, the German Wehrmacht conquered Norway, Denmark, the Low Countries and France in the first half of 1940. The Luftwaffe obtained forward airbases in newly occupied territories. During the Battle of Britain , the Royal Air Force, aided by British Chain Home radar, denied the opponents air superiority. Hitler then cancelled the invasion of Great Britain. Using new and secret radar guidance techniques, German bombers took off from occupied Europe to their targets in England.
The Royal Air Force and at a later stage the US Army Air Force, counteracted by carrying out night bombing missions against targets in Germany. The Luftwaffe introduced radar for aircraft reporting, directing searchlights and anti-aircraft artillery and for controlling night fighters.
The Kriegsmarine operated from naval bases in Holland and installed radar installations on the coast for sea surveillance and fire-control of coastal batteries and anti-aircraft artillery.
Allied intelligence, using decoded ULTRA-messages (Most Secret Source), manned by scientists like Dr R.V. Jones, discovered the new secret German radar techniques and succeeded in developing electronic countermeasures. In competition between the German and Allied air forces, new measures, countermeasures, and counter-countermeasures were constantly being developed till the last days of the war. The Wehrmacht used almost all German state-of-the art radar technology in the Netherlands.
This study is mainly based on German documents from the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine. The other main source covers the German fortifications, built in the Netherlands, that were registered by the Dutch engineers shortly after World War II. Wartime Allied intelligence- and resistance reports provided additional information. This publication was previously published in Dutch (2020).
