BAMA Updates?

#1

Post by Sean Oliver » 04 Jan 2022, 01:17

Does anyone know if BAMA has a list or something of the specific items it has scanned and uploaded every week or month? It seems there is no way of knowing whether a particular inventory has scanned items or not, and each subsection must be checked manually.
It is very frustrating and time consuming to manually click through all the possible sections hoping to stumble upon scanned items. There does not appear to be any way of filtering the search results so only scanned items appear. It is necessary to click on every single item to discover if there is any docs within.
Very bad!

Have you tried to check the box 'Nur Treffer mit Digitalisaten anzeigen' on the invenio search page?

This is no help to anyone whatsoever for any reason that I can imagine because It is still necessary to click on hundreds of sub sections to see which files are available. This means it is required to click on those you've already looked at, since most have only some contents uploaded, not all. I can't believe their archivists are so clueless and incompetent, they don't seem to understand how useless their system is. Why can't they simply announce each month which new files have been scanned and uploaded?
Keep in mind I'm simply browsing to see what they have scanned and uploaded since the last time I looked. Nevertheless, to do this I would need to click on every single folder, and each folder within, and each within that one etc etc etc until I looked through ALL of the invenio folders I'm interested in.
Unbelievable. :x

you seem to forget that their archivists are not responsible for uploading the material.
Some company doing the actual scanning is. And for them, it's just their job.

Such a difficult task. If that's too much effort for you, I wonder how you manage to *read* documents. You know, with hundreds of pages of "probably not useful" text...

Why bother? They plan to upload everything, so why bother with intermediate updates which no one will care about in a few weeks. I am actually happy they focus on scanning documents, it's a smarter move.

Let's refocus: it's a great job BA-MA people do by offering so many documents for free and in high quality. There is nothing to complain about.

I have just a small excel statistic on Bestand-Level or so for the BAMA files on RM naval records and can check only on the higher level, in which Bestand updates were made. A document based can be provided manually, too. If there´s a person with more time for such a list :-)

They plan to upload everything? Surely that’s gonna take years if not decades to do.

The archive planned to complete all work until 2028 (before the pandemic).

At least everything in the series they picked, I guess.

They move on at a steady pace. If you take the Personalakten under PERS6, they loaded more than 100,000 pages in just a few months. And that's just one of the series they worked on.

I really believe going to NARA for German documents will very soon be a thing of the past.

While I certainly applaud BAMA's efforts, isn't the entire point of doing this to make these docs available to the public in an easily accessible form? Providing a monthly update of newly uploaded docs is hardly difficult or time consuming, regardless of who performs the scanning, and it helps those who are not necessarily entering search terms, but who browse for interesting items. I 'search' for specifics items every time I visit, which is usually not a problem, but I also want to browse through them, hoping to find things I hadn't considered searching for. Furthermore, entering search terms does not always succeed, since many of the subject descriptions which searching depends on are vague, brief, or misleading.

Documents *are* available in an easily accessible form.

If you take a year break and browse again in 2023, all will be available in the series now partially scanned. Your "problem" will be fixed.
