Generalleutnant Georg von Apell (1884-1945)
Generalleutnant Georg von Apell (1884-1945)
Generalleutnant a.D. Georg von Apell died in Lich / Hessen on 30 March 1945. The town was occupied by US troops on that very day or one day earlier, and Apell was only 60 years old. Smells like another suicide for me.

Re: GL Georg von Apell
If you want to have certainty you should try to get the death notice from the german registry office.
This would finish all your speculations - and you will remain serious

Re: GL Georg von Apell
Apart from having no time for researching the exact biographical details of several thousands of Wehrmacht generals, I doubt that somebody performed an official autopsy on Apell's body. His death will probably have been certified by the local doctor, and there are cases where suicides were covered up on the wishes of the family. So, even an official Totenschein would be no definite proof. I don't say that Apell killed himself, but I say the circumstances are somewhat suspicious.

Hi Askropp and Dieter!
Askropp is obviously right. See todays post from Andy (abaus) in my genealogical data thread.
Lungenschuss!

Lungenschuss!
Re: GL Georg von Apell
Here is the Sterbeurkunde.
Note that it is still unclear whether the death was a suicide or enemy action. I think that the fact that he died in a neighbor's house from a Lungenschuss still does not clarify that question.

Hmm ... if I wanted to shoot myself, I would aim at the heart or the head. If Lich had been occupied by the Red Army, I would say he was just gunned down, but I would not expect that from the average US soldier. Maybe he was venturing outside during the occupation and hit by a stray bullet. In any case, I was right in my assumption that this was not a natural death.
