Forthcoming titles, 2022?

#1

Post by J. Duncan » 04 Dec 2021, 17:30

Does anyone know of various forthcoming titles for next year dealing with Hitler, Nazi Germany, SS ? This thread would be used to post topic related books to watch for in 2022. One I noticed that sounds interesting was “Hitler’s Court” by Gortemaker. She wrote a good book on Eva Braun.

Found 2 more. One on Heydrich’s wife Lina which may show promise since her primary source is Lina Heydrich herself whose memoirs were never translated into English. The other is a book about books (I tend to enjoy these) concerning Stalin’s personal library. There are already 3 books on Hitler’s!

My thanks to forum member J. Duncan for mentioning "The Third Reich's Elite Schools".

Link: https://global.oup.com/academic/product ... de&lang=en&

Interesting, as my mother's older brother was in the NPEA "Spanheim" in Carinthia until the end of the war in 1945.
There is little literature on this subject.

There was a single framed photo of the son in the uniform of the NPEA in the bedroom of the parents, after the death of the father in 1967 the photo disappeared without a trace, that's how it was.

NPEA ("Napola") https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationalp ... ngsanstalt

Very good advice, thanks again!

Hans

P.S. Typical German "Dealing with the Past" ("Vergangenheitsbewältigung") in those years, those affected and former relatives were ashamed, everything was destroyed, or hidden.
I was only 11 years young in 1967, small and curious boys remember many things only too well...

Hi Hans
Interesting experience you wrote. I think the book is way overpriced ($115 US dollars, 544 pages https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/ ... te-schools ) but it’s the first I’ve seen in English language. I usually scout around for topic related material for the next year. I hope if others come across anything they’ll post it here (hint..hint), otherwise (if anything) I’ll remember where to go to retrieve because I’ll forget the author/title as time goes by. I’m hoping Stephen Kotkin comes out with the 3rd volume of his Stalin bio.

Thanks for the link, an interesting text, and the few photos previously unknown to me.

The high price for this book is surely due to a relatively small edition, so my personal guess?
Today's circle of interested readers should be limited, as always, a German language translation would be desirable...

John - thanks for keeping us up to speed on new books. When you say there are three books out on Hitler's library, which ones do you mean? I have the Ryback book and the Gassert/Mattern bibliography - but what's the third one?

Also, I had to laugh at the "Hans von Mend" book. When did Mend become a noble? He was a completely shady character whose book about Hitler in the Great War was one of the very few to be banned by both the NSDAP and the Allied occupation forces. It first came out in 1931. Mend died in prison in 1942. He is discussed at length in Thomas Weber's "Hitler's First War"...

Hi Jeff. I didn’t even notice the “von” (lol)
The third Hitler Library book is by Ambrus Miskolczy “Hitler’s Library”. It’s a good book. I have all three.

Another one. “In Hitler’s Munich: Jews, Revolution and the rise of Nazism” by Michael Brenner.

Currently reading “Hitler’s Court” which has been released. About 1/3 way through. Nothing thus far which hasn’t been said before in other books. No photographs. Hoping it gets better. A rather dull read thus far. It’s supposed to cover the inner circle post war - maybe that will be more interesting?

This one is not forthcoming (2018) . John Koster “Hermann Ehrhardt: The Man Hitler Wasn’t “. Not sure if it’s a serious biography or a hobbyist’s whim.

Finished “Hitler’s Court “ - I give it a C-. It never got more interesting. She did her research, many many endnotes, however it reads like a report and I found it quite dull. Something new I learned, Wilhelm Bruckner was implicated in possible foul play but was cleared as it was determined the young girl he was dating and took to his room committed suicide when he wasn’t there. Not a single photograph within the book either! Her Eva Braun book was much better.

Huh, odd.

Killing Hitler's Reich, The Battle for Velikiye Luki 1942-1943

Essentially, it's a deep look at the battle, in chronological order. Kurowski's work on the subject is hard to follow, and in many place nothing more than direct translation of older documents. This incorporates new Russian sources, and tries to put the battle more into context of the bigger picture.
