Location of Ghetto boundary photo
Wondering if anyone can confirm the location of this photo ?
It appears to show a Polish Ghetto boundary, with some kind of Kapo, Polish State/Blue Police and Orpo man. Looks like early period due to the lack of Star of David and the manner and condition of people coming and going. Also the fact that they can come and go through the barrier.
If anyone can narrow down the timeframe or location or confirm the text signage I'd be interested to hear.
Text L-R :
'Gaststätte Bar'
'T.M. Tarasjewiczo(?)'
'Fabrik arekolady(?)
Plutos'
(Click to enlarge) (Click to enlarge) Regards,
Gerard

Hello,
The one sign reads "Fabryka czekolady Plutos" which is chocolate factory.
Best regards

Re: Location of Ghetto boundary photo
"Fabryka czekolady", a large factory, was located far away from the ghetto. That's one of their salespoints.
That man wasn't a kapo, kapos were in concentration camps.
It was a standard complement of such a post/gate - a Jewish policeman, a blue policeman, and a German gendarme.
I don't think the condition of the people means anything. Some Jews were allowed to leave the ghetto - for various reasons. Many Poles and Germans worked in the ghetto.
btw blue policemen had nothing to do with Polish State.

Re: Location of Ghetto boundary photo
Thanks for the confirmation of text above, very helpful !
I have been searching for images using 'Fabryka czekolady Plutos' but the ones that appear don't match the building above :
e.g.
https://www.warszawa1939.pl/obiekt/barska-28
&
https://www.warszawa1939.pl/galeria-pow ... -podstrona
I suspect this one above may have been a shop rather than the primary factory ? Based on the Bar beside it and the connected building 'T.M. Tarasjewicz'.
Presumably Warsaw based on the prevalence of this company 'Fabryka czekolady Plutos' there.

Re: Location of Ghetto boundary photo
According to 1938 business directory, T.M. Tarasiewicz was a joint-stock company, owning network of coffee shops.
It's a corner of Chłodna / Żelazna. Building was featured in The Pianist movie (Bar for everyone).

Re: Location of Ghetto boundary photo
I've been to Warsaw a couple of time and done walking and bus tours that skirted Ghetto areas but have no reference at all to this location. The original location in the top picture is gone (at least I have not been able to find it in google maps street view).
Based on your information I found this which refers to the original location & Pianist movie location :
Here is the actual filming location, based on the real location featured in the photo above

https://war-documentary.info/where-was- ... st-filmed/SCENE 3. Another page of the dark history was recreated with photographic accuracy based on the preserved pictures of the Warsaw ghetto. The factual corner of Chlodna and Zelazna streets (within the actual ghetto) was built (by the Germans) with the so-called ‘gates’, a transition from one part of the ghetto (known as ‘large ghetto) and the other one (known as ‘small ghetto’). We could see Wladyslaw and Henryk waiting for the lineup to cross the gates. The cinematic version was recreated on the corner of Stalowa and Konopacka streets in Praga. One would notice a replica of the ghetto wall, lined aside Konopacka. The tram line (as it is today) goes along Stalowa street. The building behind the gate was accompanied by the ‘BARDLA WSZYSTKICH’ (Bar for everyone) sign.

Re: Location of Ghetto boundary photo
Correct. Basically none of the buildings in the former Ghetto survived to this day...The original location in the top picture is gone
