Were Flakpanzer crew by Luftwaffe personals?

#1

Post by Sebastian_Z » 11 Nov 2022, 05:21

Dear all:
I thought Flakpanzer belong to the anti-air battalion of the army and was crew by tank crews. I saw a model kit today with Flakpanzer crews with Luftwaffe uniforms and red insignia indicating them to be flak gunners. Is this true or false? Are Flakpanzer crew by panzer units or a mix between army and Luftwaffe personals?
Best regards,
Seastian

Flakpanzers were crewed by soldiers from the Panzertruppen, either army or Waffen SS and who wore the normal Panzer uniforms of the various types.

The leichte Flakbatterien of the numbered Luftwaffen-Flakregimenter were equipped in part with 2-cm and 3.7-cm Flak guns mounted on half-tracks from the beginning of the war to the end. Also, the Luftwaffe Panzer-Division "Hermann Göring" in its various forms was outfitted with tanks mounting armament of various caliber, half-tracks and wheeled armored cars with light Flak guns, etc. In 1944, some of the Luftwaffe's regular Flakabteilungen were fully motorized and redesignated Flak-Sturmabteilungen and these also had tracked vehicles mounting Flak guns. All of these were Luftwaffe and manned by Luftwaffe personnel wearing Luftwaffe uniforms. There are a good half-dozen books on the history of the Fallschirm-Panzerkorps "Hermann Göring" and its various components. Example:
Bender, Roger James and George A. Petersen. “Hermann Göring”: from Regiment to Fallschirmpanzerkorps. San Jose (CA): R. James Bender Publishing, 1975. ISBN: 0-912138-12- 2. Hb. 208p. Pictorial with accompanying text. Maps. Color and b/w dwgs of insignia and emblems. OB lists. Bibliography.

Maybe this is your Luftwaffe Flakpanzer scale model

Don't mixe-up two different things.
"Fallschirm-Panzer-Division Hermann Göring" was a Luftwaffe unit. So its men belonged to Luftwaffe. But it in fact is was under order of Heer.
Panzer Divisions were actually parts of Heer.
Both had Flakpanzers. So Flakpanzer crews of "Hermann Göring Division" were Luftwaffe soldiers and those of Panzer Divisions were soldiers of Heer.

Let's not base anything on a 1/35th scale model. The Flakpanzer crews in HG belonged to the Panzer Regiment and would therefore have had white waffenfarbe not red, the modeller is just plain mistaken here.
