A good guess. But if I'm not mistaken, this officer looks like a Generalmajor, don't you think, George?

Unfortunately, my eyesight is not good enough to tell clearly what rank the shoulder board is in the picture.

My guess, looking at the picture, is that it was taken in the first Russian winter -- seeing the way it was used to protect against the cold.
