Wagner on their progress. The 'finger' pointing at the Southwestern supply routes reminds me of previous Russian offensives. If left there the finger expands into a salient:

Interview with Gerasimov. The "3 motorized rifle divisions" will likely be staffed mostly with conscripts/volunteers from the occupied areas. I suppose the 1/20 attack in Z-Oblast was carried out by a lot of people from these regions :

https://aif.ru/society/army/glava_gensh ... a_ne_znala

"In order to neutralize these threats, the country's top leadership has set the task of adjusting the Plan for the Construction and Development of the Armed Forces. Its parameters were approved by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief at an expanded meeting of the Board of the Ministry of Defense.

The main ones are the creation of the Moscow and Leningrad military districts, the formation of three motorized rifle divisions as part of combined-arms associations in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, as well as the army corps in Karelia."

Last year Italian trade with Turkey was going up by 87 %
Pure bollocks.
Last year the Indian oil export has increased very strongly .
Indeed so. They buy it because it is deeply discounted "India have rejected the price cap and Russia has offered to help India build oil tankers to enable them to ship Russian oil directly to India, bypassing the sanctions. In December India was buying around one shipload of 1m bpd. During December India increased Russian oil imports, receiving a discount of USD12-15pb which is around USD7pb higher discount than in October, giving a buy price below the price cap.

"The USA believe African countries can benefit from the Price Cap by buying oil from Russia at discounted prices, saving up to USD6 billion p.a.]

Russian revenue from oil export duty reportedly fell from USD120m per week to USD47m a week after sanctions came into effect, a fall of 60%"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Russ ... _price_cap
Not pure bollocks
And India is importing more Russian oil than it needs and sells it to countries that officially follow the sanctions against Russia .
''reportedly '' means : claim without proof .
About Turkey :
in October 2021 it imported 576000 tons of crude oil from Russia
A year later, in October 2022 this was 1,429,000 tons .An increase of 853000 tons . Why ? Not because Turkey needed all this oil, but because Turkey exported this Russian ,disguised as Turkish oil, to countries, who said that they did not buy Russian oil .
The sanctions are evaded,as all sanctions :when in 1935 Italy invaded Ethiopia ( as unimportant as the Russian invasion of Ukraine ) ,the wokes, who mostly could not show Ethiopia on a map ,were whining and demanded sanctions .Sanctions were declared and every one was evading them .
When in 1965 Rhodesia declared itself independent ,sanctions were declared and all trade with Rhodesia was forbidden , but in all marginal constituencies, these sanctions were evaded and the government of Wilson looked the other way .

From Euronews (very establishment ) : more than 550 ( 220 ) global companies are continuing ''business as usual '' in Russia .
Companies as

Your usual half-read/half-understood blabla

AstraZeneca - halt new investments/new clinical trials
Bayer - stopping unspecified non-essential business activity
Engie - no new investments
Armani - Suspended investments
ING Bank - pause all new business
Philips - online sales still available in Russia
Merck - no further investments/clinical trial enrollment
Nestlé - halted non-essential imports/exports to Russia, stopped all advertising, and suspended all capital investment
Red Bull - suspend new investments
Unilever - stopped imports/exports and stopped all advertising and investments
Yves Rocher - uspend new investments/development

Companies totally halting Russian engagements or completely exiting Russia... 341
Companies temporarily curtailing most or nearly all operations while keeping return options open...491
Companies that are scaling back some significant business operations but continuing some others...168
Companies postponing future planned investment/development/marketing while continuing substantive business...163
Companies that are just continuing business-as-usual in Russia...226

https://som.yale.edu/story/2022/over-10 ... ome-remain
Red Bull SAID that it suspended new investments and Red Bull is continuing to operate in Russia .Etc
226 companies are doing business as usual, thus not following the orders of their governments .
321 are continuing their operations and claim that they stop future investments, for which there is no proof and which does not indicate that they follow the sanctions ,A company can stop investments for non political reasons ,thus for economic reasons .
And those who evade the sanctions will not tell it to Yale ,which is an establishment US organisation ,and which has no business in Europe .

Actually, I'm a long-term paying subscriber to substack and, among others, to (independent journalist) Glenn Greenwald.
So I can say with conviction that James Kirchick is, judging by the article, a boring, corporate idiot.

Although I criticized Greenwald in his comment section for his shallow understanding of Ukrainian history and, among others, the false labeling of Azov as Nazis, that was an entirely different thing from Kirchick's irresponsible, idiotic article.

It looks like Russia has opened up the Z-Oblast front.

Besides attempting to seize these settlements this should draw Ukrainian attention away from Bakhmut-Soledar :

Image

🔻In the Orekhovsky sector, units of the 58th Combined Arms Army tried to storm the Novoandreyevka-Novodanilovka line, but the offensive failed, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine repulsed the attack. The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation returned to their original lines.

🔻In the Pologovsky sector, Russian servicemen began to advance in the direction of Gulyaipol.

🔻In the Ugledar sector, the soldiers of the 155th Brigade of the Pacific Fleet and the 7th Operational-Combat Tactical Formation rushed through the defenses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and occupied the dacha areas west of Nikolsky.

▪️At the same time, the Russian Armed Forces, unexpectedly for Ukrainian formations, began to advance on Ugledar from the west and south

You do not understand the G7 oil sanctions against Russia. The price of Russian oil is capped well below market prices. India (and perhaps Turkey) are paying even below that set price. Result - oil prices not rising in the world but Russian oil revenues tumbling. A brilliant solution.

Yeah, and how many were there 6 months ago and how many will there be in 6 months time?

The Russian economy is going down the tubes.

The global economy will take years to recover.

Probably not, very good article here https://foreignpolicy.com/2023/01/19/ru ... pe-energy/ on the likely complete failure for Russia in the economic war.
Basically the global economy has almost already replaced its need of Russian fossil fuels - which sales of supply most of the Russian governments revenues.
I can hope, but beyond the immediate effects on the RU economy, we have massive supply chain disruptions, trade routes altered. The rebuilding of UKR will be very $$$. The new arms race will be a drag on the civilian economy too.

So in Jan 2022 there were approx. 500,000 professional-contract servicemen (army, airborne, marines) plus active reservists of the 2021 BARS program. If minimum 11,000 KIA/MIA plus 'irrecoverable' (crippled) claimed by anti-Kremlin Meduza/BBC is correct we have minimum 22,000 plus professional-contract servicemen permanently out of action. On top of this is contract expiration, which is a further outflow.
Except its not believable.

And thats not what the BBC claims.

Its this sort of disingenuous baloney that Putin lovers love to use. The BBC never claimed that there were only the 6K or so RU KIA, but thats only how many they could identify through public records. Totally different.

Both Britain and the US claim about 150,000 RU casualties. That means ~30K KIA, ~120K WIA. 30K of the WIA wont return to combat. So, about 60K permanent casualties. The rest return over time. The DuPuy institute estimate is about the same. Noway claims about 180K RU casualties. Do the math.

However this is balanced by their now extensive experience holding static positions and digging trench lines.
Except for recovering half of what the RU initially stole...... The UKR do a damn sight better on the offensive than the RU.

To sum things up, things don't look good for the Ukrainians in this war of attrition as they are taking many multiples % higher attrition to their professional cadre
Says who ? Other than the RU MOD.

EU and the 'West' is hardly "the world". More like 11% of the world population.
The west is most of the economy. Thats what counts.
