Russian forces in Ukraine will be annihilated in relatively short order.

Again, as I've stated a number of times. Even if Putin orders a full on nuclear strike on half the world, there will be no safe haven for him or any of his henchmen. All Russian strategic military assets will be eliminated in less than an hour. Meanwhile, an enormous surviving force of NATO/non-NATO forces will simply drive right into Moscow (after the fallout settles) and hang every person affiliated with the Kremlin mafia.

This will involve 2 billion casualties, but that will be the result.

As an American, I hope to speak for my fellow citizens- we don't care what kind of government you have, values, or anything else. You can install a new Tsar up in the Winter Palace if you want. BUT STAY WITHIN YOUR LEGALLY DETERMINED BORDERS SINCE THE BREAKUP OF STALIN'S EMPIRE IN 1991. That's all.

According to a Russian military doctrine ... nuclear weapons could be used by Russia
"in response to the use of nuclear and other types of weapons of mass destruction against it or its allies, and also in case of aggression against Russia with the use of conventional weapons when the very existence of the state is threatened."

Proceed. A country can't say, "we have hydrogen bombs- give us your country or we will kill everybody". No way, Jose. Bring it.

Before nuclear weapons, the real unasked question is why the Russians are rarely using their larger bombs in this war, and instead constantly using expensive and lower yield missiles and artillery. They used FAB-5000 at the Azovstal. By continuously not doing so, they sacrifice their troops in unnecessary combat. They have already fought many unnecessarily long battles for a year.

There are now a mass of Ukrainian formations concentrated at Bakhmut-Soledar. These weapons could be used on them with devastating results and Wagner would be able to advance.

Could it be (*gasp) that they are trying to keep the civilian death count down? The infrastructure is ruined anyway by the shelling.

ISW 1/25 also is of the opinion that the Z-Oblast attacks are diversionary in nature, at least for now. ISW has a strong belief that the Russian strategic offensive in the spring/summer will come from the North and then the Center. They disbelieve the Southern approach.

"Russian forces may be engaging in limited spoiling attacks across most of the frontline in Ukraine in order to disperse and distract Ukrainian forces and set conditions to launch a decisive offensive operation in Luhansk Oblast. Russian forces have re-initiated offensive operations, namely limited ground attacks, on two main sectors of the front in the past few days—in central Zaporizhia Oblast along Kamianske-Mali Shcherbaky-Mala Tokmachka line and in the Vuhledar area of western Donetsk Oblast.[1] Ukrainian officials have noted that these attacks are conducted by small squad-sized assault groups of 10 to 15 people and are aimed at dispersing Ukrainian defensive lines.[2] The size and nature of these attacks suggest that they are more likely spoiling attacks that seek to distract and pin Ukrainian forces against discrete areas of the front than a concerted effort to relaunch offensive operations to gain ground in the central Zaporizhia and western Donetsk directions."

Why not escalate to chemical weapons first? Smoke the Ukrainians right out of their fortifications? Far less collateral damage than a hydrogen bomb, no?

Perhaps a biological weapon? It's doable. To what end? For what purpose? Enough have been killed in this pointless war. Russian troops should go home today and never return to Ukraine. Russia proper will never fear invasion. Putin knows this.

Here is the US using MOAB, a less powerful bomb than the Russian FOAB. They should explore this option before using Tactical nuclear weapons.

Although it makes high fun in the Kremlin, there is absolutely no possible way, in 1 million years, that the United States would deploy nuclear weapons in any conflct. Certainly, in 1945, they were deployed. At the time it wasn't certain what they would do or if they would even work.

Japan will greet Siberia soon with the "Divine Wind".

The key 'western mindset' that is the absolute root of the current conflict.

Absurd. It's not a "western mindset", it's reality vs. insanity. I guess Putin will decide in the end, regardless. He can kill 75% of the world's population with one keystroke.

If NATO were to sign a 1000 year treaty with Putin to remain within his borders for that length of time, would he honor that? His successors? Being the heirs to his eternal kingdom?

In my most cynical view, I would think the most successful long term strategy for Russia and its people would be to ally with NATO against other rogue states in Asia/Africa.

It could happen on paper. Of course, these war crimes will need to be hammered out. Again, on a cynical basis.

The root of the conflict is Russia thinking that eastern european peoples do not have the right of selfdetermination.
