Re: The end of tanks as we know it?
"What will we oppose the Abrams and Leopards, will Russia have enough missiles and ammunition, what new weapons will soon fall on the line of combat contact and what weapons are being changed right now on the recommendations of the fighters on the front line? The special military operation lasts almost a year, during which time not only the army, but also the defense complex has accumulated new experience. What is the potential of the Russian defense industry and how our military plants live in the conditions of sanctions and special operations - the host of the program "Military Acceptance" Alexey Egorov was able to talk with the General Director of the state corporation "Rostec" Sergey Chemezov. Rostec is the largest defense association in the country"

Re: The end of tanks as we know it?
The first objective of the Russians is not territorial but primarily destructive: is to 'demilitarize' Ukraine, by inflicting catastrophic human losses on them. They want to inflict a superior kill ratio and emphasize this.
per Tanks,
In the early phase of the war (Feb-April) there were significant Russian tank- IFV thrusts, typically with very little and sometimes even no infantry support. Once the Donbass operation opened, tanks were in the main used as assault guns to support infantry and have been ever since.
The performance of Ukrainian and Russian tanks in classical tank operations has been in general, lackluster due to modernity.
The key Russian tactic, which follows Russian doctrine- in this war is to use their superior artillery and airstrikes to decimate Ukrainian formations. There is also a bias towards using 'proxy' infantry (PMC, separatists, Chechens etc) rather than politically destabilizing reservists. Whenever anything happens to the reservists there is an uproar in the Russian social media.
The aim of the battle of Bakhmut is to be tie down as many Ukrainian formations as possible with the Wagner PMC's highly aggressive squad-platoon sized infantry attacks (supported by smaller companies PMC Redut and PMC Patriot) and then dump high-explosives and chemicals on top of them from the artillery forces of Wagner and the 1st and 2nd army corps DPR/LPR. In the summer 2022 it was primarily the separatists performing the operation but as Wagner expanded they took over as the primary antagonists.
On the flanks, North and South, it is held by the various Russian army districts with the majority of the tactical groups belonging to Russian army and armored units curiously absent from the front. Most of the Russian marines units are in the front line of the Ukraine though. Defensive stance, with counterattacks made to stabilize breeches.
Re: The end of tanks as we know it?
If that's the case, they don't seem to be doing too good a job at it.
The Russians aren't in a defensive stance, they're attacking along 5-6 axes of the Donbas frontline! See here, for instance. On the flanks, North and South, it is held by the various Russian army districts with the majority of the tactical groups belonging to Russian army and armored units curiously absent from the front. Russian troops demonstrate the Krasnopol 152mm Guided artillery shell with laser designator-rangefinder 1D22.
I can see the disadvantage of using this instead of using the drone like the Orlan-10 to mark the target- the ground controller has to keep the target lazered. Unlike the drone lazer, if the tank moves the designator might lose its target.

Chinese state propagandist for russia:
"Option 1:
HJ-12 fire-and-forget top attack ATGMs
It's very light
The soft launch is capable of firing inside buildings
It has top attack capabilities that can defeat any NATO tank"

"Option 2:
Golden-Eagle 500 UAV
The biggest enemy of tanks are low-flying helicopters
But due to the proliferation of MANPADS, UAV attack helicopters will succeed that title"

The Chinese diligently copied all Soviet/Russian weapons they could lay their hands on.
And now they are going to sell the same (or superior weapons) to a country unable to produce them itself.
How the mighty have fallen.

As long as these 14 tanks are not operational, are not in Ukraine, do not have the needed ammunition, crew, fuel, spare parts, protection from infantry and artillery, they will not be used, and as long as they are not used, they are not a help for Ukraine .Gooner1 wrote: ↑24 Feb 2023, 20:5010 Stridsvagn 122 for Ukraine

And when will they be used ?
From KAKE abc com 26 January :
'' It will take almost 8 or more months to get the Leos in combat . ''
Sweden has 120 tanks and boasts that it will give 14 of them to Ukraine .
