British press on W-SS?

#1

Post by Westphalia1812 » 10 Mar 2023, 20:25

I've come across an interesting section in the war diary of OB.West:
Staubwasser reports on English radio reports ranting that English forces are not advancing. Also, the enemy reports that 30% SS are deployed as opposed to the east where only 15% SS are deployed. SS seems to be the most feared. The enemy, however, has not yet brought the main force to fruition.
Has anyone ever come across any British press reports stating this?

What is the date of this document?
I Have not yet found specific mention of the SS or them being 'feared'. This is how The Times reported the German view on Normandy

This is how the Germans were told how the V1 was performing. From the POW reports it seems most soldiers believed it.

I also found it very strange. Especially because I doubt the British press would downplay the efforts of CW forces. Thank you for providing these issues. Is there an archive for these articles?

Just wondering whether this was a Fortitude broadcast:
Staubwasser reports on English radio reports ranting that English forces are not advancing. ... The enemy, however, has not yet brought the main force to fruition.
Wiki on post invasion plan
the Normandy beachhead was struggling to succeed and so Eisenhower had taken elements of FUSAG to reinforce its efforts

I thought this would be a complete invention but checking The Times reporting found (so far)2 June/July articles that in passing criticise 'the British' for not exploiting breakthroughs.

Now you mention it that makes a lot of sense! Haven't thought about this before...

Seems we're getting closer...Thanks for digging that up. I would be surprised, though, if any article actually mentions the SS being feared.

Is this the birth of the 'our panzers can knock out 10 of your tanks but you always have 11' myth?

Times, June 21st 1944.

It seems the obvious was 'obvious' very early on.
