the Japanese type-94 anti aircraft truck's combat history?

Post by Cheerio_Fujisaki » 27 Oct 2019 02:08

Where or had the type-94 anti-aircraft truck, or the 20 mm AA Machine Cannon Carrier Truck see combat?

I can't find any sources where the type-94 AA truck was deployed (if it even was deployed). Did the type-94 AA truck deployed in china, or the pacific? If you have info, or a reliable source please tell!

It is not Type 94, but Type 98.

Type 98 AA Machine Cannon Carrier was used by 1st Tank Division Air Defense Unit during Ichi-Go operation in China and shot down American airplanes of Flying Tigers.

It is also Type 98 AA Machine Cannon Carrier. There were three models of Type 98 AA Machine Cannon Carrier - truck model, half-tracked model and full-tracked model. Only truck model was produced and others were experimental.

Hi.

Not exactly on topic but related:

How does the aiming mechanism of the Type 98 20 mm Machine cannon work? It looks a little bit more complex compared to the german ones and I wonder how it was used.

Hi.

Thx, that helps understanding it. :)

Next question:
The use of the Typ 98 HE-T and Type 100 HE-T grenades was officially prohibited in July 1942. Why?
(Sadly I can´t really read the related passage in the official document)

Link to the document from JACAR:

It is an order to recall defective ammunition of Type 98 HE-T and Type 100 HE-T grenades. Note that it never prohibited the use of the Type 98 HE-T and Type 100 HE-T grenades. It prohibited the use of defective ammunition of them.

Hi.
That makes more sense.

The Wikipedia Japan article mentions that at least the use of the Type 98 HE-T was completely prohibited with that document (footnote no. 9). Seems to be a misinterpretation...

By the way (and to get back to topic):

Test report of the truck mounted Type 98 AA-Machine-Cannon with the well-known pictures from JACAR:

No, Japanese Wiki article is correct. It refers to the following document.
https://www.jacar.archives.go.jp/das/image/C01006014400

It prohibited the use of Type 98 HE tracer. After this order, Type 98 HE tracer was not used by Type 98 20mm AA cannon. It was used by Type 97 AT Rifle.

The document you linked prohibited the use of defective ammunition of Type 100 HE tracer, though I included Type 98 HE-T by mistake due to your post.

Hi.

There was also at least a test version using the Type 2 20 mm Anti-Aircraft Machine Cannon:
