Czech Student Demonstrations Dispersed by German Police

#1

Post by Globalization41 » 11 Jul 2004, 08:48

Prague, United Press, The Merced
(California) Sun-Star,
Wednesday, Nov. 15,
1939:
A few score Czech students --
shouting "freedom" -- demonstrated for a
second time today in Karlaplatz, but were
again dispersed by police. The first
demonstration was by about 200 students, of
whom ten were arrested after the crowd had
been broken up by armed storm troopers
and German police. Police patrolled the
streets of the city, including the central Plaza
where the second demonstration occurred
throughout the day. ... The demonstrations
followed the death of a Czech student who
was injured in demonstrations on October 28
-- the anniversary of the founding of the now
dissolved Czechoslovak Republic. ... The
body of the dead student lay today at the
home of his parents. He was fatally wounded
when police and storm troopers broke up
Czech demonstrations on the anniversary. ...
At that time, the demonstrations wore black in
mourning for the Republic and, according to
Nazis, shouted insults at German police and
storm troopers. ... Several persons were
injured and many arrests were reported in
connection with the October 28
demonstrations, which occurred in the center
of Prague. ... Foreign reports in Paris and
London had said on several occasions there
was widespread sabotage and unrest in the
German protectorate of Bohemia and
Moravia, the former Czech State, but these
reports lacked substantiation and were
denied by Berlin. At one time the British
Ministry of Information issued a report
[alleging] rebellion was spreading among the
Czechs, but Germans strongly denied it. ...
Today's demonstrations centered around
Kalthof Square, where police succeeded in
forcing the students to move along the street
to the opera house where there was another
outburst of shouting. The cry of "freedom!"
was heard repeatedly.
... When the
demonstrators reached the parliament
building and the German technical college
along the Moldau embankment, 20 fully
armed storm troopers arrived on motorcycles
and in trucks. ... They took positions at a
bridge at the lower end of the university
building and dispersed the crowd. Storm
troopers and small detachments of German
police then searched the university building
and arrested ten students,
who were taken
away in police trucks.

Nazis Execute Nine Czech Students by Firing Squad

#2

Post by Globalization41 » 11 Jul 2004, 09:35

Prague, United Press, The Merced
(California) Sun-Star,
Friday, November
17, 1939:
Nazis today executed nine Czech
students by firing squad on charges of
perpetrating acts of resistance and attacking
Germans. ... The official announcement said
many others were arrested and that Czech
universities had been closed for three years.
Followers of former President Eduard Benes
were blamed for a series of demonstrations
beginning last month and continuing
sporadically until today. "The remainder of
the protectorate is quiet," officials said. ...
The announcement followed action of armed
German storm troopers and reinforcements
from the Gestapo or Nazi secret police in
occupying the Czech university, high school,
and student house as a result of freedom
demonstrations by Czech students. ... An
official announcement said Czech
universities have been closed for three years.
... Official German quarters had indicated
earlier that drastic action would be taken if
demonstrations continued and it was stated
officially the universities had been closed
because of acts of resistance. ... The official
German news agency D.N.B. said that the
Prague measures had been taken because
a number of students had attacked Germans.

Nazis Saturate Prague with 10,000 Storm Troops from Reich

#3

Post by Globalization41 » 14 Jul 2004, 08:39

Prague, United Press, The Merced
(California) Sun-Star,
Saturday, Nov. 18,
1939:
The protectorate government today
declared martial law in certain districts of
Bohemia and Moravia. The districts
affected are Great Prague-land, Klando,
Beraub, and Horchowitz. The order of martial
law will not apply to German citizens. ... The
declaration followed execution today of three
more Czechs, two of them policemen. The
deaths bought to 12 those shot by Nazi firing
squads
in two days for acts of resistance in
Prague. Nine students were executed
yesterday in the Nazi drive to put down
freedom demonstrations. ... The additional
executions were announced as 10,000
imported German storm troopers
ruled this
capital of the Nazi's Bohemia-Moravia
protectorate. ... In Berlin the propaganda
ministry announced Emil Hacha, former
president of Czechoslovakia, had appealed
by radio to the Czech people to preserve
order. ... Before announcement of additional
executions an authorized source in Berlin had
said the protectorate was calm. ... A
spokesman at the office of Baron Konstantin
von Neurath,
Nazi protector of Bohemia-
Moravia, referred all inquiries for details of
executions to the propaganda ministry in
Berlin. ... Following the arrival of the storm
troopers by automobile and motorcycle from
the Reich,
the city was quiet as death all night.
Czechs kept off the streets, avoided public
places. ... The Germans announced all
Czech universities were closed for three
years because of the students' acts of
resistance. They blamed the disorders on
Czech intellectuals in conspiracy with
Edouard Benes, the last president of
Czechoslovakia before German occupation.
He now is in exile in England.

[A quick gander at the pre-war map shows
Czechoslovakia's unstrategic position, the
western half being a long unnatural salient
into a rearmed Germany run by Adolf Hitler,
history's all-time No. 1 warmonger and
military buff.]
