If that is the Salmander; they all had forward sweep.

I would differentiate those with straight leading-edges from those, shown in the drawings mentioned above, with "dramatic" forward-swept wings.

The He 162 death machine was non-lovingly called the Salamander and it had the straight cant wing with the odd ball wing tips. Very few flew in action and at leat 12 JG 1 pilots were killed in the crap a/c. some through misfired ejections through the canopy glass.

The forward or back swept winged He 162's never flew operationaly.

this is off topic as the header was asking for the Me 163 and Me 262B two seater. why don;t you guys continue the He 162 discussion on a new thread..............

thank you

Erich

Yes Erich, I won't post on this thread again other than on the subject title EXCEPT to say that, what's his name (Cap't. Brown?--the British post-war test pilot of captured German aircraft and author), thought that this was a sweet-flying aircraft. Of course, it didn't seem to fly apart so much at that point. Signing off for now.
Tom

--the odd-ball wing-tips, I think, were to prevent airflow from streaming accross the wing (much like modern passenger jets have an upturned wing-tip). But I am not an engineer of aeronautics.

By the way i forgot to mension (of course you guessed it yourself but still...) that the model of the plane i sent was "Salamander's".
Oh and i found one more interesting website about Luftwaffe's "paranormal" invensions: http://www.roboterkampf.com/htmlluft46/bmw1.html

Hi just to sort out some of the original question,

The Me262 did come out as a two seat nightfighter version as well as a two seat trainer below are some night figher versions. The top picture is currently in a museum somewhere and there are many pics of it on the net.

All pics from (if they worked its my first post)

And here are some trainer versions of the me 262. If you are really interested in the 262 i highly recommend the book Me 262 Stormbird Rising (pretty sure thats what its called) full of photos and info on this aircraft.

Once again pics from

And as for the Me 163B, well the B model was the operation version while the A (or V) models were the prototypes.

thanks Storm. The B-1a/U1 was introduced to Kommando Welter in very small numbers...........less than 9 and only 1 flew ops and that was Röte 12 and it scored 1 mossie for the unit. all other kills were made by single seater 262A-1a's. Röte 10 pictured was suppose to be the mount of Welter but he never flew a 2 seater...........

cheers

I know this topic is almost 20 years old, but I should emphasize that the He 162 proposals with forward- and backswept wings never progressed beyond the design. Some older sources refer to these projects as "He 162C" and "He 162D", but there is no evidence that the forward swept wing and back swept wing He 162 designs were designated as such. Original line drawings of the swept wing He 162 proposals can be found in this October 1946 document issued by Wright Field Air Material Command:

Dunno why people in this thread said the 162 was a 'crap' aircraft. The thing had issues due to quality control but by that argument any plane is 'crap' when they aren't built properly.

The people who actually flew the plane all considered it to quite the delight to fly and otherwise had only few problems with the plane. But again what plane is perfect?
