In Narvik (Liland in Ofot-Fjord) there was the 3rd submarine division (2 submarines B1 and B3) with the mother ship Lyngen. What exactly happend on the 9th of April to the 3rd submarine division. I know that the submarines were sunk by their crews and the B1 was salvaged later on and evacuated to UK. Do you know some more details. Do you know how big was the crew of Lyngen? Do this vessel had any armament? BTW the same question about the crews (number) of the 4 norwegian ships in the Narvik harbour Cate B, Eldrid, Saphir, Rödskjael. What happend with the crews after the ships were sunk. Did Germans try to use Rödskjael?

The next question is about the Kvitoy patrol vessel. I have found it was based in Lodingen not far from Narvik. Do you know anything what happend with the vessel in the time just after the German Invasion? I know that it was captured on the 9th of June by Germans and later used as Widder. But what happend between the 9th of April and 9th of June 1940?

Jack;

If my glace through the posting was correct, no one answered you question regarding the lost of SS Bärenfels (D; 1921; 7,569 BRT), sunk while tied to the jetty alongside SS Marie Leonhardt in Bergen Harbor on 14 April 1940. The ship, which was carrying critical Flak guns and AA ammunition for defense of the harbor area, had arrivied, and been attacked, on 12 April but, due to congestion, lack of equipment, and air attacks, had not been able to unload any cargo.

Following the two prior efforts on 10 and 12 April, and based on prior recon reports of many shipping targets at Bergen and with the expectaton of good weather, the Air Officer Commanding at Hatston, Acting Captain C. L. Howe, RN again decided to strike naval targets in Bergen harbour with a sizable force of the Fleet Air Arm Skuas now available. In the event, atotal of 15 Skuas from two of the three squadrons on hand were dispatched, departing in two waves.

The first wave consisted of six 800 Squadron aircraft led by Captain R. T. Partridge, RM departed at 0500, while the second, contained nine 803 Squadron aircraft led by Lieutenant W. P. Lucy, RN, departed at 0550. Each aircraft was armed with a single 500 lb. SAP bomb.

800 Squadron crossed the Norwegian Coast at 0700 and attacked at 0712, dive bombing the two vessels tied up at the jetty and strafing two submarines, U-60 and U-7, and two schnellbootes, S-23 and S-25 in the harbour.

After the first wave departed, the weather over Bergen deteriorated significantly. Of 803 Squadron, only Lieutenant Lucy's three-plane Blue section was able to locate the target and make a low altitude glide-bombing attack. Lucy’s bomb exploded along side Bärenfels, between her and the jetty, causing a substantial damage and strating a severe fire - the later ultimately caused the loss of the ship when over zealous fire-fighting efforts flooded the after portions of the ship and caused her to sink, stern first, to the harbour bottom (althoug her upper works remained above water), taking her valuable cargo of anti-aircraft guns with her.

Lucy's number three was shot down in flames from 300' over the harbour while crossing an island containing the only operational Flak battery (2 cm) defending the Bergen. Both crew members were killed On the way home the two surrviving Skuas strafed a German He-59 seaplane on the water and destroyed it.

It is worth noting that subsequently (in June), the ship was raised.

Lucy's sub-flight was composed thus:

Blue-1 (L2988,:A8F): Lt. William Paulet Lucy, DSO, MiD, RN (P-CO), Lt. Michael Charles Edward Hanson, DSC, MiD, RN (SO)
Blue-2 (L2925,:A8G): Lt. Alexander Beaufort Fraser-Harris, RN (P), LA George Scott Russell, RN P/Jx.138673 (AG)
Blue-3 (L????,:A8H): Capt. Eric Donald McIver, RM [MiD] (P), LA Albert Alexander Barnard, RN Fx.76460 (AG) [both KiA]

Hope this is of interest.

Does anybody have some more information about dutch ship Bernisse (15) 951 BRT, 18 men crew? What about the length and other dimensions? I would really appreciate a picture of Bernisse.

I'm also looking for crew numbers of norwegian ships Cate B, Eldrid, Saphir and small tanker Rodskjael. What about submarine tender Lyngen (my previous post)? I've got a picture but just know it was built in 1931, 489 BRT, 12.5 kn. I don't have any info about dimensions, crew etc.

The last but not least I look for some info about small patrol crafts Aud I, Torfinn I (based in Ramsund near Narvik).

Thanks in advance for any help.

The Miramar Ship Index has 381,000+ (and counting) ships in its easy-to-use index. Information on the Bernisse is fairly rudimentary, but it's a start. Try using the index yourself and see what you can find. BTW, when googling for information on ships, try entering the ship's weight next to its name.

It would be very nice if you something to the origin of the information etc. could send.

Surely many thanks

Thanks in advance
