Dornier four-engined bomber ?

#1

Post by Vasco da Gama » 03 May 2005, 00:41

Hello everyone,

greetings from sunny Portugal. I have this question battering my mind: did Dornier, a world-leader in developing bomber aircraft designed a four engined bomber ? That doesn`t includes the well-known DO 19 of 1930`s vintage, the so-called Ural Bomber. I mean a 1940`s project, eventually based on the DO 317 or DO 417. I find it hard to believe that this company gave up on big bombers, while others, more involved in light aircraft did designed some heavies. Any help would be much appreciated. Best wishes to you all.

Good day Vasco da Gama, right now I´m still at work and I really can´t get a hold of my entire Luftwaffe files from my other PC, but I can only recall a certain "Dornier Do 200" .
It was used by the Germans for captured USA B-17 Flying Fortress bombers used as bomber decoys and secret transports.
The number 200 was probably derived from the designation of the unit using it, the I./KG 200.
I will get back to you soon on this matter.

By the way...greetings from Aveiro, compadre 8)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I almost forgot to say... check this out --> http://www.luft46.com/dornier/do214.html
It not only had four engines BUT eight !! 8O
Originally designed as the Do P.93 for passenger transatlantic service from Lisbon to New York, the Do 214 was redesigned as the P.192 for military service.
Hi Max,
nice to have a fellow countryman in this forum. I know about those captured B-17`s and their use by KG200 from a book on german special forces. I suspect of the existence of some Dornier work on modern multiengine bombers from the absences in the Dornier project list, and from the experience they had on this type of airplane. Much is to be uncovered on this and other issues, but I know of the existence of several books in Germany pertaining to Dornier. Probably they include some extra data on this. By the way, much of the information Dan Johnson has is taken from Dieter Herwigs range of books on "Luftwaffe Secret Projects", available in english. I strongly recommend them to you. Hopping to know from you, all the best.
Not a Bomber per se but a 4 engine Dornier none the less.
Arguably the most graceful looking of the Dornier flying boats, the Do 26 had a gull wing and retractable floats. The push/pull arrangement is interesting as the rear propellers are hinged to rotate upwards 10° on take-off to clear spray....
or what about the Do 214 & 216? Big planes.
regards
A :)
Hello Vasco D´Gama, I´m back
...and as for the Dornier Do.26, yes, our friend @ Aufklarung is quite correct, it had four engines.
But unfortunatelly, as he pointed out, it was a flying boat type of aircraft and not an all-purpose bomber as you are looking for.
You can also see a very good model here -> http://hsfeatures.com/do26bt_1.htm
It seems the engineers/designers at Dornier were not too interested in making (four motor-engined) bomber-types of airplanes for the Luftwaffe.
BUT they still made some very interesting aircraft none-the-less...
...specially when it came to flying boats 8)
Dornier four-engined bomber ?
Thanks, Max.
excellent picture of the Do 26. Also thanks for the list. I wonder if you have data on the Do 218 and 221 ? Or the projects P. 273, 254 and 238 ? In the german aircraft designation system the numbers 218 and 221 were efectivelly allocated to Dornier, but I lack any info on them ( possibly not used ). Regarding those Projects, what can you say ?
I would like to add a jet fighter proposed by Dornier, a so-called "very small fighter", with pilot in prone position, straight wings and powered by a BMW 003. It`s sketch appears on page 92 of "Luftwaffe Secret Projects", by Schick/Meyer.
Best wishes.
No problem dude, always glad to help when I can.
You can check out some info on those aircraft you´re requesting on http://www.luft46.com/dornier/dornier.html
I can also provide you with some scans from a book "German Jet Genesis" ...as soon as I find where the hell I put that electric plug! LOL :P ...I will post them soon
The book has some info on the Do.P. 232 (P.231) , Do.256, Do.435 (Do535/He535) and a not so known "Dornier Canard Fighter" which wasn´t given any number designation
As for aircraft designation numbers, check this out --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_RL ... signations
or here... http://www.designation-systems.net/non-us/germany.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Another interesting place for more info would be... http://xplanes.free.fr/do335/do335-1.htm~
If you don´t read french (I don´t) use Altavista "Babel Fish web-translater" for free.
It has good info on the following aircraft
Dornier P.247/6
Dornier P.254
Dornier P.273
Dornier P.252
Dornier P.256
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is some more stuff you can ad to your information list.
You can research all these on the internet using Google/Alatavista/Yahoo etc. etc...
Dornier Project List
P.59 - Fighter project
P.174 - Project number for Do 216
P.192 - Project number for Do 214
P.231 - Fighter project, became Do 335
P.232 - Mixed propulsion fighter project
P.238 - Fighter project/Do 435
P.247 - Pusher propeller fighter project
P.252 - Night fighter project
P.254 - Mixed propulsion heavy fighter
P.256 - Night fighter project
P.273 - High altitude fighter
P.1075 - Do 335Z heavy fighter project
Do. 435 - Mixed propulsion heavy fighter/P.238
Do. 335Z - Twin Do 335 project
Good Luck on your researches.
I will post some scans soon and more information (As soon as I find my scanner plugs! :P damn electric plugs)
Cheers
MAX
The slots 8-218 and 8-221 were allocated to Dornier by the RLM, but not used. The P.238 was a proposed two-seat version of the Do 335 (there are few suggestions that the Dornier Do 435 long-wing derivative of the Do 335 was based on the P.238, although these are unconfirmed), and "P.273" is a lapsus for the Dornier project designation P.237, a high-altitude fighter version of the Do 335 with a pressurized cabin and a wingspan as big as that of the Dornier Do 435. The Dornier P.254 was a proposed Do 335 variant with the rear Daimler-Benz DB 603L replaced by a Heinkel HeS 011 turbojet, and it was to have been a night/all-weather fighter and heavy fighter with a top speed of 513 miles per hour. The P.254 most likely was designated He 535 after being handed over to Heinkel at one time.
